  • Need help GETTING infected

I know, I know, it's strange, but I'm doing a presentation on malware, and need examples of the popups, and fake AVs, and stuff like that.

So, HOW do I get infected?

    Sites? Programs? Anything?

Keep the brain bleach coming, I'll probably need it after this.

Hm. Test a website, www.msnbc.msn.com front page.

Earlier last week, they were getting LOTS of complaints about drive by infection. Ads did it.

Also go to security forum @ dslreports.com Those guys are pretty good.
Too bad limewire is dead, one of the best places to get infected.

Hook the pc up to the net, wired, no AV, no anti malware..with minimum patching.
    Then look.

Do you have a web mail account with a populated junk folder.. that may be a good place to start with the odd phishing mail etc

Only other thing I can think of is a bit dodgy... looking for game or software hacks/cracks with P2P software .. not that I do but I have seen & cleaned up the results; and the mess left behind from some "ahem" adult sites too *shudder*
        Arp happens!

Just when I was getting used to yesterday, along came today.

Porn sites are notorious for this.

I don't know if Kings of Chaos is still around - their site as notorious for this, too.

Torrent sites can get you some, too.

Also, what Cutenoob suggested - security forums (dslreports.com may not be too bad) and ask them, I'm sure they can hook you up.

Make sure you don't have a hardware firewall, either. I've been running with the only protection being the firewall of my router and even with visiting some less-than-reputable sites have yet to have a problem.

If you lived near Vegas, I'd offer to let my dad play with your computer for an hour. He seems to have no problems getting his computer infected all the time. unless he's learned to be sly, he doesn't surf any pr0n sites either. Looks like it's all from banner ads from his poker and blackjack sites or the emails he forwards.

Look though your spam filter for free anti-virus programs, those are usually pseudo-viruses / scareware.

I'm borrowing one of the loaner laptops. I'll just reformat it when I'm done.

remember to disable as much of the security in the browser you're using as possible (don't block pop ups) and click on every pop up and ad you can find.

Quite a few of the Lyric sites seem to be pretty badly infected, they are a big target for viruses as they are easy to set up and get a high rating on google quite easily.

Think about all the lessons you were taught to avoid infections, every single lesson, and do the opposite. You should be bogged down with enough problem software to make any tech run in terror in about a week. It also doesn't hurt to go to a computer store and ask the techs there what the biggest malicious software issues they have and look up the most common means of getting it.

Of course, you don't really want to go nuts with this. Too much can cause the machine to crap out completely and it's not so useful for a demo anymore.

                              uninstall your antivirus/anti-stuff.
