  • Thank I need a new DVD burner?

I have feeling I need a new one but just getting 2nd opinions before I go out and replace it....

Anyway, here's what happens. I tried burning a double-layer disc with Nero Vision 9. Everything is fine until it gets to the "writing lead-out" it stays there for a really long time then comes up with the error that the burn process failed.

Here is the log file it created, snipped to just the error:

I tried it twice and basically the same error every time. And no, I'm not trying the unstable POS that is Roxio. FYI, I know people hated Nero 9 when it came out but on windows 7 it works great.

The reason why I think I might have a bad drive is because even after I exit Nero, the drive is still spinning and giving it's "writing" indicator light (it's a Samsung writemaster). Only way to stop it is to reboot the machine.

    Some specs:

    Homebuilt.
    Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.
    4GB RAM
    Asus P5N-E SLI
    Core 2 Duo E6600

Get rid of the Nero,I had similar problems, turns out there's a slew of complaints against them.

The issue is that Nero went from being a simple but great burning tool to a full-fledged media suite to appease the retail big-box crowd. That's when the issues began.

I don't really know if Roxio is any better.

My personal preference as of late is a program called ImgBurn. It's small, effective, and free. Never really had an issue with it, which is more than I cay about Nero or Roxio. <shudder>

I see some suggestions for software. I got tired of Nero/Roxio frustration and have been using cdburnerxp on my windows boxes.

This. Try again with ImgBurn and see how it goes.

NOT_READY means pretty much what it sounds like -- Nero is telling the drive to do something when it's already busy doing something critical. This is supposed to be a non-fatal error; that Nero is treating it as fatal makes me think Nero is the problem.
