  • I think I killed it? (360 system)

It may be to the fact that until now the 360 had little to no use until I got Fable 3 and Bayonetta and played sporadically instead of rarely.

Well this morning went to play bayonetta, about 30 minutes into the game had to pause to tend to daughter. about 5-10 minutes come back hubs notices the tv went dark (still on) and the 360 was flashing the red ring. All but one section was red and it was flashing 3 times stop, flash 3 times stop etc. He went to turn it off and or see if he could get the disc out.
About 10-15 minutes later just to see if it was still going nuts while I was on the phone with a semi savy 360 friend hubs said it was back on and had successfully retrieved the disc and was loading. Just for my sanity I'm not touching it for the rest of this month.

Now is it truly dead? or did it over heat. This is the same system that is about 3 years and older, had already been serviced for the video card (right term) dying on us and xbox people sent him a new system and new face plate - we kept the memory card and they sent him instructions on how to retrieve his gamer id and warranty so if this one dies we should be ok i'm just trying to make sure it isn't in its dying throes or just needed to cool off

For the first time, yes. After about the third or fourth time, it tends to be "Not this **** again!!!"

It could be that it overheated. The only way you'll find out is to start it up again later. If you're following the guidlines like no enclosed space, solid flat surface, upright (though that one I still say could go one way or the other), nothing on it, etc, and it does that consistently, there's a bigger issue at hand.

no enclosed space, dusted every two days if not daily (thank you swiffer duster! lol)
sitting flat as the upright didn't work for me. It was probably that i left it on pause one too many times as that morning daughter was not having it, mom was supposed to love her not the tv! which happens, except she usually likes watching her parents..scratch that her DAD playing games...

We did get a new tv shelf a while ago. The area the 360 is in is meant for a vcr or dvd player but big enough that you could stack two of the first edition ps3's on top of each other and have a few inches left. Thats probably what did it.

thank you! (i worry because I seem to be a jinx with computers and game systems sometimes. It didn't used to be that way)

um that sounds like an enclosed space, and unless it's open backed heat will build up.
Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

I feel your pain. We just got a 360 for Christmas and My husband was playing it last week when the screen went red and he KEPT playing for a few more minutes. Turned it off and back on and got a partial red ring also. Let it cool off for a day or two and blew out all the dust and it worked for a few minutes but it's pretty much dead now. So we get to replace it because we bought it used from a game shop. We were able to use swagbucks and hotel points though so no out of pocket $$ to get a new slim one. And from what I've read the slim can't get the red rings, I hope that is accurate and not a myth.

had a friend post this on my facebook as advice

"How solve the red problem permanently? Open the casing, unscrew the hard drive or power source from it's present slot and move it over a space or two AWAY from the other one you didn't unscrew. . rescrew hard drive or powersource in this n...ew location. Return casing to its covering position.

Congrats. you just did what EVERY video console repair shop does, but saved yourself about $50 and a day."

And Steel I have one of those...been looking for it as it was buried in the storage closet. It goes to the old white 360 so it might fit the black one. however the white 360 was one of the first ones (maybe first or second edition white?) as it was around before the first profile changes came around. haven't had an issue with that and i use it as my backup....in emergency only

With the invention of this gadget did microsoft finally stop the "If you use a Nyko cooling product your warranty is void" deal?

One of my old white 360s went RROD, but i got a brand new 250 GB from the fiancee for my birthday, and i leave it on for 8-12 hours a day playing movies and streaming shows from my PC, its in the open and laying flat, and has been just peachy so far.

If it is the RROD, you can always try the "towel fix" got me an extra year out of mine. Just you tube it lol.
