  • Cisco Router Trouble

We got a Cisco Valetplus router last year because our old Linksys couldn't support all four of us on our laptops at once, and wasn't a locked network so anybody could get on and use our internet. This new router has worked nicely in that it can support the four laptops plus the desktop that is hardwired to it, and the network's now a little more secure.

Here's the problem: of all the laptops on the network, mine is having the most trouble with it. It's a Dell Latitude D620 running WinXP SP3. When the router was installed it came with a key drive that we had to plug into every laptop to have it install the software and be recognized by the network. The Dell took this key without complaint.

However, since then I will randomly lose my Internet connection and get "Page not found" errors. Mine is the only one that will do this. It's annoying when I'm just browsing, but it can be frustrating if I'm actively working on something, like updating my Monster profile so I can get a job or even posting here. It's gotten to the point where I'll keep Word open and type what I want to type in the Word document so I can save it, because I can never tell when I'm going to lose my connection. Once again, it's only my laptop that does this. If I lose my IP address, no one else does.

For the time being the only thing that fixes this is right-clicking the icon on the taskbar, opening View Wireless Networks, and getting back on the network or repairing it. This will refresh my connection, but loses whatever I've done on that page (hence why I now keep Word open). Often it'll boot me off the "locked" network and throw me onto the guest network, but it won't let me do anything unless I enter the guest password which changes daily.

Anyone know why this is happening or if there's a possible fix?

Heck of a lot more information needed.

I'll write up everything I need to know and send you a PM.

All right, I'll wait for that PM from you techincal.angel.

The only other thing I think is worth noting is that I use a different antivirus software than the rest of my family. I still have Spybot and Symantec Corporate Edition installed on the laptop, since that is what my college required students to have to be able to connect to their internet network. My family has something called Charter Security Suite installed on all the other computers, which they got when we switched over to Charter for our internet service. Quite frankly, I think the suite reeks compared to what I've got right now, but I'm wondering if because the router is hooked up to our modem (from Charter) that my issues are stemming from having a different security set up.
