  • Slow internet :(

We just moved into a new house...it's not too far away from our other house, and it's awesome in every regard...except the internet. We used to have time warner cable internet and it was pretty damn good. Hardly ever had a complaint.

This new one is Axxiom or someone, I'm not sure who, but it's on a satellite on our roof and quite frankly it SUCKS. I'm not sure but I think any sort of inclement weather pretty much shuts it down. And any time there's more than one person logged on the network.

I can play WoW really early in the morning, and after that my lag meter is in the red the whole time. Can't function when every key I push takes 3 seconds to register in the game.

So I'm looking into new internets. I thought of Verizon, but they don't service my area. Time warner is also not set up for my street. I'm looking at some Fairpoint options, but I'm a little leery of the ads. They make it sound really awesome, with lots of big numbers and fancy talk like "REALLY SUPER FAST!" but then, even if there was a dialup service offered they'd say the same thing.

Anyone got any suggestions for who might be a good ISP?

Satellite is usually only an acceptable option if there is no other service available beyond basic dialup. And then, it's still something of a crapshoot.

I would suggest checking out Broadband Reports (aka DSL Reports) for providers in your area and their ratings/reviews. Be sure to actually read the reviews because a lot of people just don't have the first clue about who is really at fault (my provider had a lot of complaints because Verizon would cause problems with the installs).

If you'd like more help, you can shoot me your ZIP in a PM and I can dig a little deeper.

Satellite is very crap. Because you're past their end of line for that neighborhood, you won't get the big ISPs. They haven't developed or installed their trunk lines for your area.
Curious, how rural are you? How far away from a city/town are you?

Honestly you really don't have much choice if you're too far away from an ISP's copper/fiber lines. You could shout and holler but it's not cost effective to install copper/fiber for one household. One way to do this would be to have your whole neighborhood holler and protest, but even so, would almost need a guaranteed amount per month from that area to just pay for the infrastructure/installments.

Check if Clearwire is available in your area, and also research their consistency/up time.
      Good luck.

I'm afraid I couldn't be much help, though.
