  • Computer freezes during download/upload

Hey all, my computer has run flawlessly up until about a month ago.

Right now it freezes during any big download/upload (i.e uploading video to youtube)

Any ideas what this could be?

I use an nVidia n force motherboard
    one 8800GT video card
    4gb ram
and run windows 7 64 bit
    quad cor 3.0 processors

I'd start by checking for dust bunnies in the heatsink and air intake on the powersupply........
There's no such thing as a stupid question... just stupid people.

        Just a couple of questions:

Does it freeze immediately after starting the download/upload, or after awhile?

Are you still using the computer during the download/upload, or leaving it alone?

Oh, and what browser/program are you using to download/upload?

For YouTube, i use my HandyShare program for my Zoom camera. For other DLs i use either Google chrome or Vuze.

The thing is, i have always had downloads running in the background for the last year with this PC, while gaming .etc, it has never even slowed down one little bit. This was a very sudden thing.

It freezes about 30 seconds after i start, sometimes i can do small downloads no problem (drivers .etc cause no issues)

But it starts out by my browsers saying they cant connect to the internet, then everything bogs down, then ill try to ctrl-alt-del, but just get a message that it cant open, and end up having to hit the reset button.

Everything else works flawlessly, browsing, games .etc, its just the downloading/uploading

I'm wondering if there's a broken or corrupted file somewhere in the downloads folder that's causing it. Id 'try going into your browsers settings and changing the location where the downloads are saved, maybe make a folder in the Documents folder called "download TEST", then try a download and see what happens and how long i takes before it does happen.

If you download a lot of content, your ISP may be throttling your connection too. There are tools out there to monitor this.

I ran into a problem similar to what you're experiencing with one of the churches I do work for.

Their DSL connection worked fine for normal surfing, but large updates/downloads/uploads would cancel after a few minutes. No lockups or crashes like you're having, but similar in not completing downloads or updates.

Turns out the problem was the DSL modem was being flaky, and a replacement later, the problem was fixed.

Not saying that your modem is a problem, but I'm thinking something network-related. Maybe the connector in your computer going bad or a Windows update attempt to 'update' your network driver - that's what I'd probably be looking at. Is there another place that you could take it to, to test with a different Internet connection, or a different network connector on the computer that you could test?

Is anything popping up in the event viewer?

Open a command window and run a continuous ping to someplace else like google and see if it freezes too. could also be a security software issue.
