  • Malware on PC

There is malware on my daughter's Pc that apparently is named secureware security center or something similar. It is not allowing any antivirus or other programs to run. She and her bf have tried various things, including trying to find it via safemode and trying to run an antivirus from a flash drive.

Anyone have any ideas that may help. It is a windows XP program on an ordinary desktop.

I would suggest downloading rkill.exe on an uninfected computer from here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/down...ti-virus/rkill using one of the renamed version and running that. Once that is done I would install and run Malwarebytes. Also, most of these malware programs are pretty functionally stupid in that it only checks for the file names of common AV/Malware solutions. If you rename the executable (like on malwarebytes) you will be able to run it without issue. (at least that has been the case with malwarebytes when I ran into these types of infections.)

I've noticed that several of the newer malwares running around now are outright hijacking anything with a .exe extention. You can fix that by going into the registry, but you want to be really comfortable with registry editing before doing that. I can dig out the link to instructions on exactly what keys need to be edited if someone's interested, although I think I posted it in a recent thread here somewhere.

I think this: http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/reg/FixNCR.reg might fix the keys you're talking about. It's been a while since I ran into an exe hijacker.
