  • Possible virus?

Every once in a while, while clicking on a link from Google search it will not send me to the link I clicked on, but to something else not related. It is not always the same site.

The operating system is windows vista, and the problem occurs in both firefox (version 12.0) and in Google chrome (version 20.0.1132.47 m)

I have run scans with Avast; malwarebytes; spybot; and have zone alarm as a firewall. None of the scans have picked up anything on the computer (I did update the databases before doing the scan)

It doesn't happen every-time, and there is no pattern to when it will happen. It only happens on one computer, and has happened while in more then one location, (One of my friends thought it could be in the router, but this disproves that theory.

If this is a virus, how do I get rid of it. If it's not a virus what is it, and how do I deal with it?

Someone here suggest it could be the 'referrer' link being hijacked. Not clear on whether its your computer or the sites servers though (not to my befudded brain anyway). Their suggested short term fix is to copy the URL rather than clicking the link from google.

I am so SO glad I was not present for this. There would have been an unpleasant duct tape incident. - Joi

Sounds like a Google redirect virus. I've been seeing those alot lately, and there's a couple of nasty ones that update faster than the scanners can keep up with. Try your manual virus scanners first. If that doesn't work, look up <site> Google redirect, where <site> is one of the site names you're getting sent to. There may be some info out there on cleaning it out of the registry.

Could also possibly be a bad domain server in your configuration, or the configuration of your router. (It's happened to ISPs on occasion too.)
