  • I may need a new video card...

I came back to my computer this morning and there was no display but the computer was still running. Since I highly doubt both monitors went (all is working now after a reboot) I'm pretty sure it's the video card.

This happened a few weeks ago also but I gave the computer a good cleaning.

Now, I'm looking at video cards. I know what I want (currently have a nVidia GeForce 220 - and would like to stick with nVidia),

PCIe X16, 1GB, nVidia chipset (obviously)

My main question - I see several companies and none I recognize, who makes good cards? Just on the low end I see Galaxy, EVGA, XFX, PNY (I know them), or should I go with a nVidia branded card?

i have had good luck with both PNY and EVGA in the past. my current card gt550-ti is an EVGA and actually runs cooler than any of my pny cards

I just got an EVGA gt430 W/1Gig from Newegg that has been working pretty good for me. Not the top of the line card but it seems to be a pretty good mid-range one. Primary, I have been use it for IRacing.

I ended up getting the EVGA 550ti (2B). It's in my computer now - we'll see how it goes (I"m surprised it fit!).

The old video card was put into another computer that doesn't have as much of a demand so it may be OK in there for now.

I'm using an ECS nVidia GT220 1 GB myself. Works pretty well and compatible with my Hackintosh system, but your video card purchase will depend on what you're using your computer for.

Nvidia don't make their own cards any more, neither do ATI/AMD. There are a number of well-known card makers who take the chips and make them into complete products. The chipmakers do produce reference design cards, and sometimes you see that the reference design has been used straight by the cardmaker.

EVGA is one of the better brands for Nvidia based cards.

Note that problems with graphics cards can be caused by a dodgy power supply. If your new card starts acting up in the same way, that's the next place to look.
