  • Need a part name

There was a cover on the power socket on my laptop, operative word being was, that kept the power cord in there nice and tight. It's fallen off and now the power cord sometimes wiggles so that it's no longer connected, and I start running on battery. I want to replace it, but I need to know the part name so I can order it. The laptop is an Acer Aspire 6930.

hmmm. Sounds like the DC Power Jack itself is bad. It should be tight even if the plastic on the outside was missing. Good news though, after a quick search I found both the 90w and 65w jack sells for under $10 for just the jack and cable (google search of "acer aspire 6930 dc power jack") or $30-50 for the Left Hinge & DC Jack (90w part #33.AVB07.001 or 65w part #33.ASR07.005)

Damn. If the power jack itself is bad, that means I can't fix it. I don't know how to solder, and I can't afford a new laptop if I fuck it up. I actually did just find a battery operated cold solder gun in an apartment I was cleaning out, so I was planning on learning... hmm. I'll look into it. Thanks!

Page 152 - exploded diagram and pages after show the exact parts, but will depend on your exact model.

If it is part of the casing itself and their design is similar to ones I've worked on it will be the "Lower Case Assy" 60.AVL07.001 - this would require pretty much a complete disassembly of the laptop, though.

I would say try using tape to hold in the plug (doesn't have to be electrical but that is stronger).

I wouldn't worry about needing to solder on this one. The jack comes with a cable that just plugs into the board. The hard part is taking the laptop apart to get to it. With yours you need to remove the LCD to get to the jack (page 73 in the link dragger gave.) This wouldn't require taking the entire laptop apart, but it would seem like it while you are doing it.

I've taken many laptops apart and it's not hard if you are careful. There are lots of little screws and plugs that are easy to miss if you try to rush.

If you do decide to take it apart and do work, I have found that the right sized screwdrivers are a must if you want to avoid stripping the screws. I found a reasonably cheap set with Phillips 1 through 000 screwdrivers at Lowes.
