    Bolded part is wrong. If it is 3, 4, 8 or 9 you round up to the nearest 5 (5 or 0). If it is 1, 2 or 6, 7 you round down to the nearest five ( 0 or 5 ).
    ah yes that makes sense. the "bolded part" is correct - for rounding to the nearest .10, but not for rounding to the nearest .05

    and i imagine the hell will be similar to the abuse some cashiers get over plastic bag taxes/bans etc

      Now our pullshiticians can blame Canada...

      For centsless monetary policy.

      Some bad puns there ... and great descriptives ...

      So:
      0.88$ => 0.90$
      0.89$ => 0.90$
      0.90$ => 0.90$
      0.91$ => 0.90$
      0.92$ => 0.90$

      0.93$ => 0.95$
      0.94$ => 0.95$
      0.95$ => 0.95$
      0.96$ => 0.95$
      0.97$ => 0.95$

      Penny FAQ

      And yeah, it only applies to cash purchases and ONLY on the final total. So if you make 3 99 cent tax-free purchases, you save 2 cents by paying cash.

      And if you're in my neck of the woods where the HST is 13%, if you make 1 99 cent purchase with tax you would save 2 cents paying by cash. (1.12 with tax, round down to 1.10)

      Oh well. I expect once I get used to it, it'll be OK.

        The trouble with trying to get rid of the US penny (at least this is my understanding) is that Illinois (Land of The Guy on the Penny) would all but threaten to pull out of the Union if we tried to get rid of it (let's just say Illinois really REALLY thinks the world of Lincoln). To be fair though the penny and the $1 bill have been American icons for now over 100 years so that would make them tough to let go anyways.

          For some people, that would be an additional argument in favour of getting rid of the penny. As for the "icon for over a century", Canada had $1 and $2 bills for over a hundred years, and 1 cent coins for at least that long. It was in the '90s that the Loonie and Toonie came along, and as of Monday the penny is being taken out of circulation.

            Not a big fan of pennies myself, but I'm kinda meh on the subject. All they're good for is getting stuck in doors therefore causing psychotic Janitors to torment you on a daily basis. I could certainly live without them.

              I have to round it to give their money back and they we lose out on a couple pennies
              We all know that the SC's -- and even probably many of the non-sucky custy's, will insist on getting the better part of that deal, even over two cents. And yes, I can see the jokes on that idiom will come flying ^_^

                    I guess we'll need to ask people for a nickel for their thoughts, now...

                          I'm not going to miss the penny, but it did have its use. We play Rumoli with pennies instead of the little plastic bingo chits. If things go bad for you while playing, the most I've seen someone loose is $4.00 after playing for over 6 hours. I did stock up, but once my stash is gone, we'll jump up to nickels.

                          Haven't seen anyone having fits about the rounding up or down yet, but I don't work in retail.

                            what i'm wondering is... are any canadians doing what my BF & I are doing here?... any penny from 1982 or earlier goes in the "save bucket".

                            The bucket's getting full but... considering it's a tiny hello kitty bucket (big enough to hold *maybe* a 1/2 cup of nerds) it's not *that* much. but it's fun at least.

                              Well, I'm not a Canadian, but every Canadian cent I find in circulation, on this side of the border, goes into my collection. I think I have $20 worth of Canadian Cents.

                                So how's the confusion going?

                                I almost never use cash, so I haven't actually noticed any difference. But I can see things could get miserable as rounding up/down only happens when paying cash (debit and credit still go the penny). But people won't be telling how they intend to pay until everything is rung up and the total is there. So do you have to tell people both the cash and the electronic prices? E.g. $17.88 for debit/credit, but $17.90 for cash?
                                There's no such thing as a stupid question... just stupid people.
