  • I CANNA DO THAT CAPT'N

Dear woman in the jeep thing behind me.

I understand that I am a convertible and as such, probably only in what seems like half a car to you.

I understand that both I, and the car who is blocking my path are pt cruisers.

However, this does not mean that I can phase through by virtue of being able to add pt cruiser + half pt cruiser. I'm afraid that they are white and I am purple, so our cars are not compatible for melding.

So could'ya do me a nice favor and STOP HONKING AT ME!

    Thanks,
    Opalin

    This made me giggle.

Seriously, what is with some people who think honking at you will suddenly make the twenty cars in front of you go faster or disappear?

I actually had the driver on one of the public buses the is used to transport people in wheelchairs, etc, lay on the horn constantly at me when I was stopped at a red light whit 10-15 cars in front of me.

I was able to get a partial plate and called about that driver.

I hate it when people honk at me at a red light, too. Where, EXACTLY, do they expect me to go? >_<

That, and that nasty habit of assuming that ALL cars should be at maximum speed within two seconds of the light turning green...even if they're ten cars back and the guy ahead of us hasn't started moving yet...My brother used to be really bad about honking at people for "not moving" in this situation...

We have a right turn lane I go through fairly often (Lindin & Woodman, if you care) that is marked twice with "NO turn on red" signs. I get honked at all the time there for following the law.

That describes most of the intersections in our city proper. And I, too, get honked at for not turning when the light's red. Go figure.

Most people are really good about that here -- the honkers are usually the dreaded wonderful tourists; lights like these are relatively few and far between. The ones you gotta watch out for are the looooong stretches of city streets where there is no LEFT turn, at all, on 4 out of every 5 blocks or so. One of the more notorious stretches like these runs right in front of the City of NOLA's Central Lockup

these are evil. and I agree, but don't blame people quite as much if they're further back, they might be from out of the area and not know.

Well, it does get annoying sometimes.

                        Green light means Go.

Green light does not mean adjust your mirror, look around, finish your conversation on the cellphone, light up a cigarette, flip the hair out of your face, and then go - oh wait it turned red again.

Which is why if I have the time to consciously think about the fact that I need to honk because you're not moving after the light turns green, followed by enough time to actually move my hand to the small horn buttons to either side of my steering wheel while you still sit there, then yes, you're getting honked at. Otherwise, though, I assume it's just reasonable caution (assuming you've moved before I get a chance to honk) since people in this town are notorious for blowing the red lights just after they turn red.

My reaction time is much quicker on intersections where only two or three cars total will get through the light if the lead car is actually paying attention.

Fair enough -- But I'm not talking about situations where people are distracted. I'm talking about the fact that you need to wait until the guy ahead of you starts moving before you can move...and he needs to wait for the guy ahead of him, etc...

Let's assume that the cross traffic is clear, and the first guy literally starts moving the very instant the light turns green. Assume that the guy behind him takes between half a second and one whole second to react before HE starts moving....etc etc etc...The people I'm complaining about here are the ones who expect the people *ten cars back* (read: 5-10 seconds away from when they could theoretically move without causing a wreck) to not only be moving, but be moving FAST, as soon as the light turns green >_<

On the other hand, if you're number TWO in line and the first one is just taking his time once the cross traffic really has stopped (our area is really bad about that too)....yeah, honk.

My brother used to be one of those people who would be take his foot off of the brakes *and hit the gas, even if the car in front still had his brakes applied* as soon as the light turned green -- and then immediately slam on his brakes -- when he was number ten in line in the situation described above. Back in his teens/early 20's, he honestly could not comprehend why such a thing could be. Note that being able to see cross traffic that had NOT gotten out of the way in time did not change his stance him at all >_>

My timing estimate may be off, naturally, but I think you can see what I'm trying to say ^_^

Indeed. I forgot to say in my own comments there that what I described only applies when I'm second in line. If I'm third or farther back, it's not my place to honk to get the people ahead of me to notice the light has actually turned green.
