What's all the hype about anyway?

The wii doesn't look all that special to me. I'm not a big-time gamer, but I play quite a bit more than a grown man should I'm sure. From the commercials, it doesn't look impressive enough for me to make an ass of myself in any electronics store. Maybe someone could enlighten me?

      I looked for one

I looked for a Wii for two months after it came out, and finally settled on an XBOX360 when Futureshop had them on sale on Boxing Day for $100 off.

I"ve seen lots of PS3's, but the price is way to much for me. However I see at least a dozen on the bestbuy.ca website almost every day.

I called stores in my area every day from the day after it came out until the week before Christmas, when I missed the last shipment, when I knew they were going to have them because the store wouldn't answer the phone, and they confirmed that next morning when my mom was there. The XBOX360 sale was to much to pass on, and I like it. I think I made the right decision.

However, I think this Wii shortage is getting to extreme. I haven't seen any in store or online since before Christmas. However, I'm haven't and wouldn't yell at the employee who answers the phone just because they don't have it.

Don't know if this will make you feel better or worse.

I don't understand the facination with getting it now.... NOW NOW NOW!!! It's not air, it's not food, you can and will survive without it. Yeah, I'd love to have one now too, ya know what, I can't, they're not available. Get one when you can, until then, get a life instead.

Nintendo is doing everything they can to get these things to market.

The problem is that they really didn't realize just how successful their marketing was going to be. Retirement homes are picking up Wiis. People's 90-year-old grandparents are getting these things!
          Reuters. CNN.

DVD playback for the Wii won't be on the shelves until the second half of 2007, and they haven't slowed down on production of the current model. The Wii has outsold everything for the last few months, and has only been surpassed by sales of the DS.

If these people really wanted a Wii that bad, they should have called up my ex and camped out with him.

After all, he brags about camping out for the Xbox360, the Wii, and the PS3.

Not only that, but he must know the release date of any and every new video game. If for some reason the stores he gets those from don't get their expected delivery on that day, he will call or go in, in person, and raise holy hell.

He's the loser that requested 3 (?) weeks worth of shifts off (and he only works 3 days a week) to play his video games. Because working 36 hours a week means he'll never be able to play again.

Ugh, people like that are who give gamers a bad rep.

I got insanely lucky when I got my Wii.
I was looking for a copy of Final Fantasy for my DS, and they didn't have one at the EB Games, so, not wanting to leave right away, I hung around gazing longingly at everything. I noticed a delivery guy come in with some large boxes, and that there were some people hanging around. I then heard that they were waiting for a Wii and that there were 4 people, and 6 (oh, no wait, only 5!) Wiis in the shipment. After those 4 got their Wiis, I asked politely if I could get the last one! YAAAY me!

I didn't have to act like a jerk once, or camp in line or anything!

He's not a true gamer. Everything with him is a competition to have the best of everything before anyone else does, or to make sure no one else ever does.

                  Back on topic.........

I kind of actually figured the Wii people had settled down by now

I actually had someone call me a piece of sh*t today because of this. Rather than get pissed, I just thought "What a pathetic ass" . I guess if you look at it as funny, it will help you get through your day.

Yikes, I had no idea they were still hard to get. Me and the hubby got up at 5am one day back in January and waited in line at Circuit City to get one. We were number 2 in line for 5 available and they gave out the tickets an hour before opening. We went grabbed some coffee and went back at opening and there was a line of pissy looking people who were angry that they were already claimed. I felt really bad for the manager there.

I'm a big video game fan and I would be an SC for this kind of thing. I realize however that it's not your fault or your company's fault that you keep on selling out on those systems. I think Nintendo should make as many of these systems they can possibly make so more are available but life is not like that. Oh well

Nintendo is making as many of these systems as they possibly can. And they're sending out shipments fairly regularly.

It's just that, for the most part, they don't stay in stores more than an hour or so after they get delivered.

If you're looking for one, don't bother calling around, as I've heard from a couple of people who work as game/toasty box of goodness clerks that they don't say they have them over the phone. Since it's a first come first served deal, they don't want to have to deal with some SC pitching a fit because the system came and went before they could make it inside the store.

Your best bet is to find out what time your local shop gets their daily delivery and show up half an hour before that and keep your fingers crossed. Either that, or as I mentioned earlier, wait for a sale to be advertised, then show up like an hour before opening.

Whooo! I got a Wii yesterday! The local game place said they were expecting a shipment of 6 someitme yesterday or today, and I decided maybe I'd just wait a bit since I was already there (not like the guys behind the counter minded having a real-live girl hanging out in the store ), and not 10 minutes later the truck shows up and I get the first one they bring in.

I cannot wait until I get a Wii...

Personally, I was more hopeful of the PS3... but, I'll let them work out the bugs on that one before I shell out that kind of cash.

Reminds me of the hype with Playstation 3 and XBOX 360, which I have the latter of. My stepson has a wii, and his aunt went through hell to get it. But, I have seen this type of behavior by customers as well.

"You're lying! I know you all have about 30 of them in the back! Let me see your manager!" (And of course, the manager can just make one of these materialize out of thin air, right?)

I have also seen this happen in local bookstores and music stores. A while back, this old fart in Barnes & Noble was demanding from the clerk to go into the back and get his copy of the new Nelson DeMille book, even though it was not set for release for another two days. The clerk, in her smiling, polite tone, told him she was sorry, but that book was not released yet. "Don't give me that crap! I know you all have 50 copies of it in the back, but you just won't put it out until the adveritised release date. I demand you go back there and get me one now!" The clerk told him again, she was sorry, but they do not get those until the day of release, which was two days from now, and there were no copies in the back. Of course, he had to see the manager, who could just snap his fingers and make a copy of that book appear. "You're just lying and sticking together! I know you all have them back there!" storming out of the store.
