Interesting - one of my banks (TD) has them in most if not all of their branches, if I understand correctly. I don't know what they'd do if a non-customer wandered up and used it, though.
A couple TD branches I go to regularly have them in the customer area. They spit out a receipt that is ONLY good for DEPOSIT on the SAME DAY it's issued (clearly marked on a sign). Since a non-customer wouldn't have an account to deposit the money into, they'd have a nice piece of scrap paper.

My bank has coin counters for customer use at almost all locations. It's free for customers, and charges 10% for non-customers (we're told we don't really want to have non-customers using the machine, but once the coin is in there, not much we can do, thus they have the fee posted). I love the machine. Before we got them, we took rolled coin only, and the rolled coin ended up getting put in our teller drawers and almost always made the drawer off once it was opened.

There is a local bank in the town where I live, and both branches have a coin counter machine, not charge for customers and I believe around 6 or 7 % for non-customers. The store I work at also has a coinstar machine, which is I believe a 9-10% fee for cash, but no fee if it's being changed into a gift card from a list of about 20 different store.

Saw something a bit eye opening the other day at one of the local grocery stores. They had a Coin Star type machine, but it had a sign that said quite clearly that there was NO CHARGE for using it. No percentage no nothing. Free to anyone who had coins and wanted to get rid of them.

I thought that was pretty cool, and not what you would expect.

If the machine was newly-installed, especially if it was some distance from the nearest place that already had such a machine, I'd expect that. Get people used to using the machine, and once they're hooked, start charging fees. The fast "ramp-up" from the "special introductory offer" would net them more fees in the long run than they'd lose from not charging them for the offer period.

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's the reverse. I think that store had a percentage fee type f machine, and for whatever reason, they changed it to free. If so, I like the way they operate!

One of the major banks here in NZ has coin counting machines in all their branches, but it keeps the coins and spits out a receipt so you HAVE to deposit the coins into an account at their bank (it even has a warning on the machine that the receipt has to be surrendered to a staff member that same day for the coinage to be added to an account)

Where are these mystical machines located? In two states and several different banks I've never seen one that had a machine just for this purpose (at least customer facing). Any time I've wanted to turn in change, and we're talking the last 20 years, I've always had to turn them in wrapped beforehand. How OLD are these people doing this??
TD Banks have them and I believe they're free to use.

Some grocery stores have a Coin Star outside of them but they charge a percentage.

Sometimes just getting people to walk in the door to use the free service is a bigger win than any fee you could extract for the service. The Wawa convenience stores in my area all have no-fee ATMs - they pull LOTS of people into the store, and while not all of them buy something, enough do that it's a net win for Wawa.

One of the grocery stores charge if you want cash back but if you want one of their gift cards it's free.

I saw one here at my local Walmart like that, but the free part once I got into it only extended to getting the cash put on a store gift card. If you wanted to convert it to straight cash, then a fee applied.

A non-customer complaining about your customer service in such gentlemanly terms. Good thing he's not a regular, it would be a nightmare!

I don't remember seeing one of these coin machines. Then again, I rarely step foot into an actual bank (yeah internet banking). When I have enough coins, I use those pre-formed transparent plastic holders. No need to count, just shove coins in until full, close and redeem. It only takes one or two minutes per roll.
