Not to mention that the old Volvo 240 is occasionally used as a "sleeper" in the more traditional sense, due to its rather large engine bay and overbuilt transmission. Apparently a decent V8 will fit in comfortably, replacing the original inline-4. Tune one of those properly, and it'll give any prospective street-racers a rude surprise.

A few maniacs on this side of the globe have stuffed Corvette engines into them, I can only assume it's because they have a death wish.
From what I've heard, the diesel version of the 240 is popular with hot rodders in California. Apparently, under California law, at "smog check" time a vehicle has to meet the standards for the original engine, even if the engine has been swapped. Since diesel emissions were pretty much unregulated at the time the "oil burner" was offered in the 240, that means you can swap in a "dirty" gas engine and still be street legal.

One of the unmarked cars here in Ireland is a Honda Civic pimped out with fancy spoliers and blue under lighting so beloved of our native boy racers. Gives them quite the shock when what they thought was a fellow racer flips on a completely different set of blue lights & pulls them over.

Back on topic...the state police out of Washington (PA) has a couple of Mustangs. That wouldn't be so unusual, if they weren't older Fox-bodied versions. I have no idea what engines they use, but I have seen better cars in the scrapyards

              Ahem,

              MUSTANG II

FWIW I saw a state trooper running traffic on the Turnpike last year in a Magnum.... the new kind, not the old kind, but still, something about a cop in a station wagon.

Did it have a 357 cubic inch engine?

I can see where handling would be an issue, but didn't these come with a V8 on that little Pinto frame? That's gotta scoot.

Yeah, a V8, with 1975-vintage pollution controls and tuning. Only that decade could bring us cars with V8s that struggled to crack 12 seconds..... not in the quarter mile, but zero-to-sixty

The 70's Trans Ams were in the same boat, they looked badass, but that 6.6L V8 was good for only, 185 HP..... a modern economy car can do better than that on half as many cylinders.

While it is certainly an effective means of throwing boyracers off guard, sadly in other countries I can potentially envision that being disputed in court as entrapment.

I've got to say that I'm a tad surprised that Argabarga hasn't posted a new thread for this past weekend. AFAIK, it was PSU Parents Weekend, and I'd be shocked if he didn't have a few tales to tell.

That may or may not work as a defense. Legally, entrapment=an officer enticing someone to do something that they otherwise would not do. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entrapment
