A check is simply a piece of paper with a person's name, address, telephone number, etc on it (sometimes not even all of those).
Unless there are sufficient funds in the bank account, checks are pretty useless. A business does NOT have to accept them if they do not want to nor are they obligated to.
And money orders aren't the same either.
Just a rant here, sorry.
I hate people who think that checks are magic money.
Hmmm... I guess that's true. I mean, they're both paper, both have/can have value to them, both have ink, security measures, numbers, you know? That sort of stuff.
That or the company they work for (like mine) refuses to do direct deposit. It's not always an option, so it's not JUST people being stubborn, ignorant or stupid.
I can understand that. I am talking about the customers who want their checks put in as cash when their company has direct deposit.
I was with you up until the point that you won't cash out checks drawn on your own bank for immediate cash deposit into another customer's account - can't quite see the sense in that rule.

I agree but that's our rules. However, I do it for customers anyways
I was resistant, on my last job, when they were practically forcing us to switch over. They said we could stay with the paper paycheck, but could not gaurantee that our checks would be routed to our store on payday (every other Friday) they might be a working day or two (the following Monday or Tuesday) before we received them. That was enough to get me to switch!
I have been nothing but pleased with it ever since! I signed up right away on my current job.
I get paid every other Friday on this job as well, and first thing payday morning the money is in the bank, and I'm on-line paying bills, or buying a bus pass at 5:00 a.m. I have also done my grocery shopping early in the morning on payday, and when I had Thursday and Friday as my days off for several months, I didn't have to make a special trip (on the bus, as I don't have a car) to work to pick up the check. Another thing I don't have to worry about, is having to take the time to cash the check on my lunch break, or worse yet, wonder how I'm going to cash it if they don't get to the store by the time of my lunch.
There have probably been about two instances, on each job, that the deposit failed to make it in by payday morning. But, in all cases, the companies acted on it asap, and seemed to learn from any mistakes.

My fiance has to go through this. He works for his dad. Dad's business has a Payroll Account through the bank. Fiance has a personal checking account at the same bank, both accounts opened in the same branch as well. Nevertheless, if he tries to deposit his PAYROLL on Friday, they hold it for the maximum 5 days and he ends up a week behind.
Now, he goes through the drive through and forces the bank to cash the check, then he parks, walks into the bank with the cash (cannot legally be held) and deposits the cash. No more holds, just alot of hassle.
The only words you said that I understood were "His", "Phone" and "Ya'll". The other 2 paragraphs worth was about as intelligible as a drunken Teletubby barkin' come on's at a Hooter's waitress.

My oldest son thinks they are, but he's not even 7 yet... so he's got an excuse. (And I am teaching him that, no, checks don't work that way. And that the bank [or credit union] is not a store where we go get money, like food lion is for groceries.
My mother tells me that my grandfather thought theat he could write himself a check for X amount...and he'd have that amount in his account. Yep. Obviously, I come from a family of genius!
And to prove the point, I have to ask, OP, when you say a check put in as cash. do you mean they just get their check cashed, instead of depositing the amount? Or what? I'm confused. Don't point and laugh at me, please.
Whatever bank or credit union I've been with has always made funds from payroll checks available right away. I guess I just assumed they did that everywhere.
