  • Pan's Labyrinth is subtitled and our banner says Grand Opening.

    Dear Sucky Customers,

The movie, Pan's Labyrinth, is subtitled. This is not my fault nor the fault of my CSR's. We did not create the movie and the production company did not seek our consultation during the making of it. If it ticks you off that bad just do what I did... watch something else. During your visit please bear in mind that I have told my CSR's that if you throw the movie Pan's Labyrinth at them in a fit of subtitled rage- they are allowed to throw it back at you.

I also realize that the HUGE banner outside the store says, "GRAND OPENING- ALL MOVIE RENTALS .99!" Yes, I know the store has been here for years. Sadly, that is also the only sign we have to tell you our movie rentals are on sale.
Why are you blaming me for the fact it says "GRAND OPENING"? And really, who cares? The part you should be thinking about is the part where you get your movie rentals for $3.00 cheaper than normal.
Go gets some .99 movies and leave us alone.

    Thank- You,

    Your Friendly HV Employee

OMG, on a related note, this is from the days I worked at the movie theatre. (language)

We had "Brotherhood of the Wolf" which to those who do not know, is a French movie. Therefore, it is subtitled.

Last show of the night, I close the box office and begin to help the people in concession clean up.

This guy comes STORMING out of the theatre and demands a manager. Now, the manager had left for about 20 minutes to go to the bank deposit.

    Me:
    AR: Angry Redneck

AR: I WANT TO SEE A MANGER!
ME: Well sir, he left to go do the bank drop, he should be back in 20 minutes, is there something I can help you with? (keep in mind I figured it was a sound or picture problem with the movie)
AR: I want my god damned money back!
Me: Sorry sir, I cannot give you a refund because we have already taken our cash to be dropped. I can get you some passes though if you would like to come to another performance sometime. May I ask what the problem is? Maybe I can fix it.
AR: That fucking asshole that sold me the tickets did not tell me there'd be words on the screen!
Me: (holding back shock and laughter) Sir, I sold you the ticket, I am sorry I didn't think to tell you about the subtitles
AR: Well maybe you should pay more attention to your job

    *AR storms off*

    I look at my co-worker

Me: Does it surprise you that all came from a guy in a NASCAR shirt?

    everybody laughed

I *didn't* know it was subtitled until the blockbuster guy (Who is such a nice guy, and he has great taste in movies) told me it was. I got it anyway

It is SUCH a good movie. I really really liked it, even though it wasn't what I thought it was going to be

For every item of NASCAR fanwear that I see plastered on someone, I automatically deduct about 10 points of intelligence from the shriveled organ that passes for their brain. It's quite an accurate rating system.

I just saw a preview of that movie a couple nights ago, and it's in my Netflix queue too. When it comes to foreign films, I'd rather read subtitles than hear (and see!) overdubbing.

If you rent Nightwatch, you gotta play the flipside in the original Russian--whoever performed the subtitles (notice my choice of words) did a brilliant job!

I wonder if your NASCAR buddy only rents VHS tapes because "DVDs have those black-bar things coverin' up the picture!"

I bought Pan's Labyrinth a while back, but I'm waiting for time to dedicate to watching it because I know it has subtitles. So, is this guy complaining because he's unable to read?

I PREFER to see foreign films subtitled rather than dubbed. Sounds much better.

I saw Life Is Beautiful in theater subtitled, and saw part on tv dubbed, and the original Italian is sooo much better.

Go back to watching a Wayans brothers movie, morons.

Hmmm, I like to watch NASCAR, at times. I also had co-workers that watched it, and we are not Red-Necks. Plus, we all know how to read.

Actually both complaints from the OP are ones we've heard over and over and over and over, ad nauseum.

We've been telling people that it's subtitled if they ask for it or at checkout. There are SO MANY people who get angry at us over it as though we have any control over what language(s) movies are in. One or two people have slipped by us without being told have called or come in ticked off demanding a refund.

The people who hate widescreen REALLY hate widescreen.
The people who hate subtitles REALLY hate subtitles.

It's all a matter of taste. I can read perfectly well but I simply don't like subtitled movies. However, I'm also not going to be an asshat about it unlike so many of my customers.

Wait, you DUB foreign films? WHAT?

We only dub things that are for children who are too small to read... Everything else is subtitled, also all the English movies (since I am from Denmark)

I guess we're just used to having subtitles on everything except Danish movies and children's movies, we hardly notice them. We do HATE dubbed movies though, it sounds soooo bad and I hate how the lip synch is off.

Disney cartoons like Aladdin and The Little Mermaid and all that usually come in 2 versions on our DVD's, one with English voices and subtitles, and one dubbed in Danish for the smaller children.

I once watched 10 minutes of a DUBBED Harry Potter, then I was about to cry from the horrible synch and the flat, unenthusiastic voices, and just left the room. I am SO glad my siblings are old enough to read subtitles now!

On a side note, I watched Pan's Labyrinth and thought it was great, despite not being what I expected. Go watch it!

I worked in a movie theatre when Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon came out. We got the subtitled version. I told everyone at least twice that the movie was subtitled and not in English, and still had people come back and complain.

I can understand some frustration if you REALLY hate subtitles, the movie companies do NOT make it obvious most of the time. I went to see Hero in the theatre, and I didn't know much about it except that Tarantino produced it, and Jet Li was starring. Turns out it was subtitled, it didn't bother me, but I saw about 10 people get up and leave in the first 10-15 mins. (GREAT movie BTW!! The imagery is absolutely breathtaking, and the story intriging)

I also just got Pan's Labyrinth from Netflix, and was unaware of the subtitles, despite months of advertising for both the movie release and DVD release. Still doesn't bother me. I tend to have to concentrate on the subtitles for the first 5 mins or so, then it becomes subconsious.

I love foreign films, and would much prefer the subtitles to dubbing.
The only words you said that I understood were "His", "Phone" and "Ya'll". The other 2 paragraphs worth was about as intelligible as a drunken Teletubby barkin' come on's at a Hooter's waitress.
