Just to add a bit to what I said earlier—when it comes to Anime, I will go with dubbing, but for some high quality things like Akira, one must appreciate the fact that the mouth movements were drawn to perfectly match the Japanese voice actors. It's also interesting to watch in English with the subtitles activated, just to see how much was lost in translation and rewriting to make the dialog fit!

Apologies to powerboy, but you and your friends are probably the majority of NASCAR fans: normal people. However, it's the few loudmouths that are also sucky customers which stick in my memory, especially when I lived in Texas, and sucky customers in all forms will be made fun of!

Okay, back to dubbing. Have you ever watched the Blazing Saddles DVD in French or Spanish? The French track in particular is quite funny, despite my not knowing the language at all. Heh heh.

BTW - Pans Labrynth is a great movie, foreign films (well, not US_based films) care more about the story than here (the US) where they concentrate more on big named stars and special effects, well, any movie after Star Wars (Point: World Trade Center, which I am boycotting, point: Pearl Harbor vs. Tora! Tora! Tora!).

On subject: I didn't know it was subtitled, but since I have a basic understanding of Spanish, it didn't bother me (hell, I don't mind subtitles).

Hopefully you've seen the new version, I have a first run version on VHS (yes, when it was first released in the US) and then the DVD (which came out a few years ago). The DVD is a lot better and the dubbing is a lot better, too.

That is so true! That crossed my mind after I saw Das Boot in the theater as a teenager, but then I was watching Japanese TV shows when I was a nine-year-old living in Hawaii. (Inazuman rules!)

Oh yeah, that (Akira) was my first DVD purchase when I made the big jump. Previously, I had only seen half of the film chopped up from TV, because the tape I recorded it on ran out! Anyway, I bought it (the 2-disc edition) twice because the first was lost to burglars. That and Ghost in the Shell are two of my favorites.

I have the first version on VHS, too! I thought they changed the dubbing....

We have DISH at work, and managed to find Akira. It took me awhile to get used to the new voices and pronunciations. I think they added a lot, too. The storyline seems a lot clearer this time around...(like there was dialogue missing in the original) Or, it could just be that I haven't watched that movie since I was in college...

Anyway...good to know I'm not crazy.

As for people hating subtitles. Well, just don't watch foreign films then.

Seriously, those people who complain about it need a life.

I know lots of people who find the little words on screen distracting and would rather not watch a film with subtitles. They are smart enough to then...shock...watch something else.

It takes me awhile to get used to subtitles, but once I do, I've found that foreign films are mostly best presented in their original languages. The English actors don't always capture the spirit of the original, and sometimes the dubbing is just plain AWFUL and more distracting.

Of course, I don't just watch movies to shut my brain off; so if I can focus on it, I like a good foreign film once in awhile.

While for some people it's simply a matter of taste not to enjoy subtitles, I think for some of the morons described in this thread, they are just too stupid and don't want to bother reading. Ya know...their fragile intellect can't handle doing two things at once.

Woooottt, I love subtitled movies. It annoys me more when a movie don't have subtitle available, why in the world does any DVD come out without subtitle? It's not like they don't have the script.

Why are you blaming me for the fact it says "GRAND OPENING"?

I suggest having a can of cola ready for those idiots and just say "Wonderful, you came for the grand opening. Please wait here.", then grab that can and pop it open. Then say "Thank you for watching the grand opening. Please come again."

I know some people that hate anime simply because of the subtitles. They don't want to "read" television. I download fansubs because I can see the new anime goodness that much sooner and it has helped me learn the language.

They also hate it because they can't distinguish some characters' genders, especially bishounen. Like if they find what they think is a female character hot, only to learn it's actually a guy. And that makes them feel gay or something.

To be fair, I did not know it was subtitled when I got it. They did not advertise this fact too well. Amazon even had it listed as an English movie. Which is why I could and did return it.

I cannot enjoy a subtitled movie, I just cannot synch between the movie and the words. I have tried many times, but I focus on one and miss the other. It is just something in my brain.

There are lots of additional complaints about the violence in this movie, a lot of people were expecting another Narnia from the advertiments.

LOL! Down here in SW PA, Nascar fans have a well-deserved reputation for being idiots. Not all are like that though--I know several who are *not* like that. However, the *vast majority* I've run into fit the stereotype to a T.

I'd rather have subtitles than try to figure out what the characters are saying. I have Battle of Britain (1969 flick with Michael Caine, who also starred in a certain other movie featuring Mini Coopers ) Anyway, it's an English flick, but there are some parts in German, mainly Hitler's speech, and the dialogue between the Nazi officers and pilots. IIRC, most of it has subtitles, but a good chunk doesn't...which I find annoying. I have no idea what they're saying!

On a NASCAR-related note, I don't watch it but I went to high school with Clint Bowyer (his younger brother was in my class, though Clint was a senior my freshman year and I had a class with him). He's living proof that you don't need competency to be successful. He was a nice (though crude) guy, kind of a redneck with a heart of gold. It's fitting that he's sponsored by Jack Daniels since his blood is probably 80-proof. Seriously, though, we're proud of him back home.

As for subtitles, I prefer them to dubs, but I usually wind up watching both versions if available. Sometimes both versions are good but generally the VA's doing the dub can't compare to the quality of the original actors.

I have a tendency to watch foreign films with subtitles on, just because it feels better that way; on the other hand, games (like Soul Calibur III) remain in English because I do like the dubbing, although there are a couple cases where I changed everything to Japanese because I had already memorized everything and because... I could pretend it was an import. <.< >.>
