"Due to religious reasons, I do NOT have to give you my last name."
Truly, I believe people can hold power over me if they have access to my full name. Which is probably why my name changes very rapidly/randomly. One day I'll be going by Juwl, the next, by Ruby J, the next, just RJ, and sometimes, I don't even use Juwl. I'll go by my legal name. That way, if someone does somehow find out my name, they won't have control over me long.

Oh yeah, I've been asked my first and last name. If they ask for my last name, I just laugh at them. One ranting bitch DEMANDED that I give her my last name. The reason she did that is that she called screaming and ranting for someone named Chris...well, we have about 10 Chris' in the store, and she was cussing and throwing F-bombs all over the place. I told her to stop swearing and calm down, or I would hang up on her. She told me, "Go fuck yourself, bitch!" blah blah blah, and I went CLICK.
So she calls back, and DEMANDS my first and last name, and Chris' last name. I told her that I didn't have to give that information out. She kept demanding and screaming and cussing some more, so...Click. This happened 3 more times, and I knew it was her each time because we have caller ID. Each time...click. So the last time she called, I didn't even do my spiel, I just said, "I'm not going to listen to your mouth anymore, I'll get you a manager." And let him deal with it...turns out, it really had nothing to do with our store.
        Dumb twat.
The guests at the fitting room were all , because they could hear her screaming on the phone. They didn't blame me for hanging up on her.

I lost count of how many times people asked for my last name. I'm never giving it to them for these reasons: My last name is a Polish last name and there's is only 2 people who go by that name who were working Whiskeyclone at the time (My mom and I), while there were 3 people who had the same first name as me I was the one who worked the most out of the 3 of them, and finally I'm uncomfortable giving my last name as it's rare and easy to find.

If I ever forgot my name tag I'd go with French or Japanese names to confuse them. My favorites were Ludovic and Akira.

I am the only person with my particular name in my entire company. People often ask for my name (when calling to put something on hold, or making a special order or whatever) but I will not give my surname under any circumstances. Usually a polite but firm "Oh, they'll know who you mean." is enough but some people get nasty about it. And sometimes people ask for my co-workers' names, and get mad when I won't give out their last names either.

I have a very distinctive first name. My bosses knew who people meant when they said "Sciath". The few times people demanded my last name, I gave them a bogus name that struck my fancy.

One guy was so nasty, I told him my name was "Fancy MacRoche". I heard my bosses laughing about it later. After that, nasty customers were always "Mr./Mrs. MacRoche".

Whenever people ask for my last name I tell people that company policy (which it really does) says that all we can do is give people our first name, last initial, and an employee number (or in the case of our call centers our login numbers for our phones)... guests get upset that you won't give them a name... well, let's think, my initials are somewhat unique (i've never seen them associated with any other sine number on any reservation history i've seen)

One time, I wouldn't cash a check cause it was made payable to cash and the customer didn't have an account with us. I tell him I can't cash the check so he looks at me and leaves. He then comes back like 2 minutes later, asking me for my name . I just tell him to speak with my manager. He then leaves. Funny how I haven't heard of it yet! So much for asking what my name is.

The only time I will tell people my name is when they are polite and just want to get to know me. Not when customers are assholes.

I hated it when customers have gotten angry with me, stared pointedly at my name badge, firmly stated my name and said they were going to report me.
The book store I worked at only had 6 employees and none of us had the same name but we all used the same name tag. One the guys made a tag that read "Bob" and we all use that one instead of our real names. But if one of us was already "Bob" the other had to wear the tag with a rubber ducky sticker over the name and be called "Ducky" all day.

                      I do it diffirent

I do tell people my name: Earl Colby Pottinger.

Then I operate by my rules, not the company's. If someone calls and asks for me, I refuse to accept the call unless they supply the receptionist a reason. If they can't tell her, I don't care to talk to them. If they are lying to the receptionist, I hang up.

To others, if they try legal threats, I demand the citation numbers - don't tell me it is the law when you can't even tell what law it is. And yes there have been the type who make physical threats, I make it clear that I know how to hide a body so it can't be found. Yes, I know you think that is extreme, but it is amazing how far most blow-hards deflate when they realize you are not joking about knowing how to hide bodies.

My bosses, I made it plain, if you are too cheap to protect me, then fire me or get out of the way. My bosses are wimps as you can guess.

Whenever customers have asked for my name I've done them one better and proudly wrote down my name, my employee number, my position, my manager's name, the store number, as well as circled (sveral times) my employee number on their receipt.

Go ahead, ask for my name. I know I'm doing my job properly and not a damn person in this store will side with you.

I like this response a lot. Anyone actually smart enough to have the citation number handy or sound like they know what they're talking about?

[QUOTE=Also, why the hell would he wait until AFTER 4 to cash this check? He had all day to cash this check. If he wanted to cash this check so badly, why wait until 4:30 ish to cash the check? ( Our lobby is closed by 4, drive up at 5).

                            [/QUOTE]

Ha! Probably because the check was crap, or he had insuffiencient/expired ID or was up to no good (weasel)........AND thought you may be close to closing time and hoped you would rush and possibly not follow procedures to the letter since you may want to close up and go home. THOSE are the types I get at 2 minutes to closing time. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!! I feel the pain of your posts...good for you for shuttin' 'em down!

I refuse to wear a nametag with my surname on it, as it's quite unusual. However, I am not listed in the phonebook cuz I don't have a landline; I'm ex-directory too, even if I got one I wouldn't be listed. I've only had an SC demand my full name once tho, and that was at the country park. I just told the SC my name was Lace Frehley. For some strange reason, he didn't get it; I told my boss about the SC who'd demanded I tell him my name and what name I'd given out; he throughly agreed with me and said he'd back me up if the guy ever worked out that I'd given him a laughably fake name. He never did... I still wonder what response he got when he rang the owner to complain about a Lace Frehley... XD

I always wear my badge backwards at work so no one can see my name or my picture.

Back in the retail days, at the young lady's store, our tags just said "Associate" so no one knew my name. If anyone asked, I always just said "Karen" or "Katherine" or "Katie".
