  • Stampeding for Pokemon

Shironu-Akaineko's thread - http://www.customerssuck.com/board/s...ad.php?t=19370 Reminded me of a story from my big Z days and I didn't want to thread jack.

This happened around when Pokemon version silver/gold was came out.

So we have the new pokemon games but a lot of the older ones to. Head office gets the bright idea to sell all the old ones at $10!! (remember they were still selling for $40-$50 then).

We knew it would be bad but even we, jaded as we were didn't expect what we got.

We had to open the doors 10 minutes early because the people outside were pressing forward so much 3 people were squished up against the glass. I'll never forget the looks on their faces. They truly believed they were going to die.

Once the doors were open it was a huge stampede for the back of the store where electronics was. People were physically shoving people off their feet into clothing racks so they could be first. The poor girl at electronics had all the games behind the counter and had been given strict instructions to only pass out one game per customer. I don't know how she dealt with it as I was at the front trying to get my till ready to go.

    In the end we had:
    16 twisted ankles
    4 broken wrists
    3 broken ankles
    and 2 broken arms

The ambulance was outside for quite a while getting people taped up enough that they could get to the hospital on their own.

It was funny when people came in later in the day asking about those games. The response?
"We were sold out of those 5 min before the store opened."

    That's just awful.

And why the fuck is Pokemon still popular?!!? It sucks!!!

Heh. Game reviews are all opinion. I have the same reaction as marxfan when someone blathers on about halo 3.

Pokemon is popular because it's actually a game with a LOT of depth and strategy to it.

You have to mix and match elements, water beats fire, fire beats grass, grass beats water, rock beats grass and fire, bug beats psychic, psychic beats ghost, ghost beats etc....

It's just got a lot of depth to it.

With the whole pokemon thing, no person left broken, but they did leave pretty much the whole store broken and we were left to pick up the pieces.

I like Halo 3. My fiancee got me into it (never got into 1 or 2), and now I can kick his ass at it. Sucks for him. Then again, I've always had a thing for FPS, and it does give me some measure of satisfaction to tell all those high school kids online that they just got beat by a girl
        Would you like a Stummies?

              Damn.

Not in the least bit surprising...

              ...but damn.

Which reminds me: aside from cheap DVD players and price-lowered PS3s, is there an actual must-have item this year?

Are you calling me a gullible sheep? (What I assume you mean by Gulliable sheeple). Do I need to get the frozen salmon out here? The game, at least when you get into two player has a LOT of depth. If you knew the depths and involvement needed to compete....... There is type matching, STABing, Manipulating HP's element attributes, Breeding, Natures, IV's, EV's, you would probably get overloaded in two seconds. The game is very deep and actually very fun and I don't appreciate such comments from the peanut gallery.

And as for Yu-Gi-Oh, the card game is actually very fun. And there is nothing wrong with the anime, no matter how silly the premise is.

Don't like it? Fine, your opinion, but please save the insults of those who do.

I agree with Velfarre here, even though we threadjacked, lol.

Not to be outdone, those Dragonball Z Tenkaichi fighting games set a new standard along with naruto for how fighting games are done now. 3-1 odds say most people who bash it haven't played it.

And just for certain purposes unknown to even me, I looked up where the Pokemon franchise stands sales units wise in video game history......and guess where it is?

Right behind Mario. At number 2. 168 million units or so. Halo franchise? not even close. All these "great" video games, dont have the numbers backing em.

Onto cowboy bebop.....as a music lover, and musician, not to mention a fan of the anime here and there, I quite enjoyed it.

bluray and hd-dvd players seem to be the "must have" item in australia this year.

oh, and hd dvb-t set top boxes..

which I find massively funny, since the people flocking to buy those things tend to not actually have a 1080p capable display to hook them up to..

ah well, if you have the cash to waste i guess :-/

although, since there is currently a "all you need to watch the new hd channel is a hd capable set top box" campaign running from one of the free-to-air television stations here (which i guess is correct, all you need to watch it is the set top box, it just wont look any different to standard definition digital unless you have a high res display) and noone working sales would want to spend the time explaining how this works to the customers :-/

To thread-jack slightly more than has already happened...

I'm not that big a fan of the Cowboy Bebop anime, but I've nabbed a few soundtracks from around the place because of the show.

                          Meh.

Noithing I didn't see when I was a kid running to get Transformers, Gobots, and Cabbage Patch kids.

Someone once even hit my sister in the face (who was what, 12ish at the time) with a Gobot ccommand center so she whouldn't get one.

(and we're talking over 25 years ago)

It's nice to see not much has changed.

The Wii is still the "I NEED THAT NOW OR MY SPOILED CHILD MAY DIE" item in my area. No one can keep them in the store, they still sell out within an hour of getting them in. It's kind of ridiculous.

Guitar Hero 3 hasn't sold out yet, but probably will.

The kid targeted anime franchises are actually good alternatives to other games. I mean, they could be begging their parents to buy them crap like Grand Theft Auto, or the movie-based games that are just mindless dribble. A lot of people write things like Pokemon off as stupid, yeah, but at least they make kids think a little. If the little bastards insist on playing video games, at least make them think.

No, Ghost beats Psychic. But the 1st gen Ghost family(Ghastly, Haunter, Gengar) had Poison for the second type! Do not question the walking pokedex.
