Ugh, we close at 5 every year on Christmas eve, and closed the day of.

Usually, everyone is at the mall, so our store (bulk store) is pretty dead.

Last year, however, I had 3 people literally SLIDE Indiana Jones style under our entrance door when we closed for the night (one of those metal chain industrial pull up doors).
And then they realize that as soon as they're in, they can't shop because we already cleared out the aisles. (We have supervisors block all main aisles to push remaining members out of the store when we close, and keep people from going back.)

    It is amazing.

My store will be open both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. No schedules have been posted yet, but the manager has said that she's not granting any requests off unless she has enough volunteers to cover because the office won't let us close the doors. I can see her point, it's unfair to make some work and let others have it off. She did tell me in private that she would allow me an exception because most of my family lives 10-11 hours away in another state. My wife and brother-in-law are the only family I have here. The rest of the employees grew up around here, so they have family nearby. I decided to wait until after Christmas to make the trip to spend time with family because I can use the overtime holiday pay.

It sucks to have to work on a holiday, but the holiday pay will help.

I work for a caterer and we close at noon on Christmas Eve. People get very upset that we aren't open until whatever time they want their food.

I did get a few of the "are you open on Christmas Day?" calls.

I guess they don't realize that we have a life too.

(we don't open up until 12/28)

My store is only closed Christmas day and Thanksgiving. We close early all major (US) holidays, depending on the particular event. Ie: 3PM easter, 6PM christmas Eve and 9PM most other holidays.

with Christmas eve being on a Monday this year I get to close the pizza place early specifically at 4 pm.
Wow... my current job is the FIRST place I've worked, in 18 years of employment, where I get to close at 4 PM Christmas Eve!

The traditional closing time here in MD is 6 PM, so anything earlier is a nice bonus.

I'm thrilled. our store closes at 3 on Christmas Eve. Of course, we are closed Christmas day.
You. Lucky. BASTARD! 3 PM? THAT'S AWESOME!

We are open regular hours (8am - 10pm) Christmas Eve, and close at 6pm Christmas day.

No special hours for New Years.. just business as usual.

And we will not be permitted to sell lottery that day. which will seriously piss off people.

Or you can get take and bake.... yum! Papa Murphy's is a US chain and most supermarkets also have them.
Apparently, they don't think too highly of the Mid-Atlantic region, because they have NO franchised locations in Maryland, and I've NEVER seen them in our supermarkets, either.

But that's okay... we DO have Freschetta Pizza in our grocers' freezers, so I think we'll be just fine.

On Christmas Eve we're open 6-7 (usual horus are 6-11) and we're closed on Christmas Day. Haven't heard any complaints yet.

Holiday pay won't help enough. Time to head to the home office, tranquilizer guns and straight jackets in hand! 'Cuz the head honchos need to go in the chipper!

Wow... I've only worked 1 place that let us be closed for 3 days like that. It was the bunkbed store I used to work at. And they only did that the first 2 years I worked for them. After that, they went to more normal retail procedure, i.e. opening like normal on 12/26. That STILL bums me out, because it was so cool actually having a few days off to spend with the family.

Wow. At least YOUR theater is run by people that still have a CLUE! When I worked at a movie theater in high school and college, we had shortened hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day like that. But I'm planning to go to a movie on "Boxing Day" this year, since I have the day off. While looking at showtimes for the 26th, I decided to also look at showtimes for the 24th and 25th while I was at it. EVERY movie theater chain in the area, including the one I used to work for, is making their employees work ALL DAMN DAY BOTH DAYS, running a full, normal schedule of showtimes! Again with the DOUBLE SUCKAGE!!!

Anyway, I wish you all a merry Christmas, and a happy and safe New Year! I hope the man in the red suit brings you all whatever you really wanted this year!

While I was on the switchboard Friday filling in for the operator's break, I took great pleasure in answering 'no, we're not' when asked if we were open Christmas Eve.

That does seem to be an American thing. I've noticed some past movies have had US release dates on Christmas day. Here in the UK Boxing Day is a common release day, but we start late on Boxing Day (at noon).

In the UK, lots of shops are closing at 6pm, everywhere is closed Christmas Day and a few idiotic shops open on Boxing Day. Why? I never leave the house Boxing Day! Lots of places are closed New Years day and there is no public transport either on the above days.

Isn't it actually against the law for shops to open on Christmas Day in England? Most states don't have any laws restricting holiday shopping. Massachusetts is the only state I can think of that does.

The bank closes at 12:00 noon on Christmas eve and is closed on Christmas day. I'm just waiting for somebody to show up at 10 past 12 and demand to be helped. Nope, sorry. That's time for us staff members to exchange gifts and such. Not only that but there's a HUGE SIGN that's been up since Thanksgiving that lists the holiday hours.

I'm glad we get out at noon tomorrow too since bf and I need to go to the DMV to straighten out my registration. Turns out they screwed up on it and we need to go get it straightened out.

"Under the Sunday Trading Act 1994, large shops over 280 square metres may only open for six continual hours between 10am and 6pm on Sundays, excluding Easter Sunday, when they must remain closed."

"Christmas Day and Easter Sunday have been excluded as trading days. This applies even to garden centres, which earlier had been trading over Easter. Details of the changes to the legislation are included in the Sunday Trading Act 1994. In 2006, the government considered further relaxation of the permitted hours of business but decided that there was no consensus for change."

It's good that the law does that; 6-6 on Christmas Eve is plenty of time for you to get last minute items... sadly, we get a lot of idiot SCs who come in at around 5:30 to do their entire Christmas shop. -.- By then, the rampaging hordes have emptied the shelves; cue much whining.
