  • My worst customer/manager ever (language/religion is involved)

    Hey guys
I worked at a cafe in bookstore (not B&N)

A regular (I'll call him David) came in and we started chatting as I was making his drink, it was incredibly slow, so that's not a big deal. We discovered he was friends with the sister of a friend of mine (I'll call him Evan) that passed away a couple years ago and we went to the same small school.
In order to understand this whole thing and why it pissed me off so much, you need to know Evan died by suicide.
David was telling me about the text messages Evan sent his sister before he died, and I told David about the email I got.
This little woman walks up. due to the shitty way our cafe is set up, I couldn't see her over the bake case, food and such. Luckily she was cool about that.
I told David I'll finish chatting in a minute, and turned to the lady to help her.

She overheard the last bit of David and I talking and, I assumed out of nosiness, ask how Evan died, and for some ungodly reason I told her, no details, just a simple 'he killed himself'.
She then laughs, yes LAUGHS and says, 'well, this world was too good for him, hell's a more appropriate place for THOSE kind of people.'

    What. The. Fuck.

It took everything I had not to jump across the counter at her. I was livid. I have never lost my cool with a customer, although God knows I easily could have, but I lost it this time. David had the most horrified looked on his face, and he's about ready to slap the bitch.

I turn to her and say with the last of my quickly fading self-control, "Ma'am that was uncalled for, and I refuse to serve you. Please leave my cafe."
    Bitch: But I want COFFFFFEEEEEEEE!
Me: You will not be served here tonight, so leave.
Bitch: A double vanilla latte, for free!
Me: Lady, get out of my cafe.
(Ok, to explain, I was give permission to kick people out of the cafe because I'm the only one in the cafe and I because have LP experience.)
She leaves, walks to the info desk and demands a manager. Luckily, my awesome manager was in magazines, and I told her to stop by the cafe before going to speak to the bitch. David defended my actions, saying he would have done worst if he wasn't so shocked. The manager said she was WAY out of line and told me don't sweat it. She ends up calling me to come escort the bitch out because and shit she was saying.
A couple days after that the GM comes in, talks to the awesome manager, talks to me, and tells me to call him when David came in. David told me and Awesome Manager he'd vouch of me to the GM if need be. GM pulls me into his office after I had a hell of a day and tells me the lady was not out of line at all, in fact she is right about the hell thing (WHAT. The. FUCK!) and I will on a 3 day suspension. Due to this shitstorm and various other bullshitary going on with the GM, I end up telling him in no uncertain terms, he is the entire reason he's stuck the week before christmas with no cafe super, and he can go fuck himself. I walked out in the middle of the shift with no one at all to cafe, not even on call. (I was the only one that could work). Awesome Manager told me he had a minor breakdown after that and a major breakdown when the entire cafe staff quit due what he said to me. (It takes at least a week to train a cafe person).

You do not fuck with the people that make your drinks and run your cafe.

(I do realize my reaction could have been a bit nicer, but I was PISSED)

wow. just wow. props to you for having the cajones to just walk out like that. GM was a douche of epic proportions. would you go back if they started begging for you to come back?

      First,

      Second,

Seriously, if that didn't send a powerful message as to just how much of an asshat that GM was being, then there's no brain there to receive it. Kudos to you for sticking to your guns.

Today's -a-thon is in full swing.

If I could find that woman and the GM, they'd meet the ...slowly...like fractions of an inch per day.

          What. The. Hell.

That is just MESSED UP. Freshly baked Wookiee cookies to you for being as nice as you were! I'd have splashed boiling hot water in that chick's face. I've known nine suicidal people, and I can tell you I would NOT have been able to contain myself to a simple "I'm not serving you."

But props to you and the whole cafe staff. Y'all rule like you wouldn't believe.

I should hope not. Unless the GM is looong gone. Makes me wonder, can you get unemployment if you prove it was a hostile work environment? Seems pretty hostile to me.

MorsDeContactus, we're very sorry to hear about your friend. I thought the whole part of being in the service industry is to have a degree of empathy for your fellow man. Sadly, your former GM had a failure of epic proportions. Additionally, you were not at all sucky to the lady. You remained civil and demanded she leave. It boggles the mind how the GM thought you deserved suspension. People and their priorities, sheesh.

              *snarl*

both the CS and the GM... their actions were uncalled for. I can only hope that if they ever face a similar situation - where a friend or relative harms themselves - that they realize how f'ed up their actions are.

personally i think the whole "automatic trip to hell thing is just complete bullshit anyway. in my opinion, when someone hurts themselves like that....they're not always in the best state of mind, and i refuse to believe that god will ever punish someone for having a mental breakdown.

and if someone believes otherwise - that does NOT excuse them from having manners. In fact, i like to think there's a special circle of hell just for them... for people who think they know God's mind and that it's OK to hurt others because of it.

personally id have been tempted to throw the coffee in her face.
but i'm glad she was kicked out.

So sorry about your friend. I thought the lady was bad enough but the GM's reaction actually caught me by surprise and that ain't an easy thing to do.

                Seriously, is wrong with people?!?

I don't care what your religious beliefs are, you do not bring them into a personnel issue. If he has an issue with the way you handle a situation, that's one thing, but to justify it by saying your friend is going to hell? That GM should be reported to his superiors, if you ask me. The only bad thing is the awesome manager and the rest of the store suffers from the walkout, too...but I wouldn't be able to work for a boss like that, either.

I hope both bitch and GM get turned into messy stains. Of all the EVIL things to say to somebody...!!

Frankly, any god that would send a suicidal person to hell just for having killed themselves because they were in that much pain is NOT any god that I want anything to do with.

At this point I'm wondering if the GM said that because he really believes it, or because he's been whipped into the "customer is always right" mindset and he's saying it to save face with the customer.

Awesome Manager told me he had a minor breakdown after that and a major breakdown when the entire cafe staff quit due what he said to me. (It takes at least a week to train a cafe person).
Who had the breakdown, GM or AM? Because it was totally suck if it was AM having the breakdown, but a beautiful show of karma if the GM did.

Wow. I could never control myself if someone said something like that and THEN demanded free service! And the nerve of that GM, the sheer...Agh, I'm working on my swearing so I can't even say it!! How dare he bring whatevertheheck his personal beliefs are in on the issue so he can punish you for that insensitive ..."woman"'s horribly offensive comment!!

People like that- just- arghhhhhhhhh .

If you want to punish him more and are willing to put up with all the litigation, I'm pretty sure you can successfully sue him for that.

i probably would have walked out too.

this reminds me of something that happend to a friend of mine.

she had just had a miss carriage, the baby had whats called turners syndrome, it was a late term miss carriage about 5 months along, she was devistated. she had taken some pics of her and the baby even though it did not survive. in her words she looked like a deflated balloon. since they had to induce labor they called it an abortion which bothered her, because the only reason she was going through it was that she would die if the pregnacy would have gone any longer.

we took the photos to kinkos to get copies, she didnt have alot of money at the time and she needed the photos for some insurance thing i guess. so we go in with the photos wrapped in a newspaper, she asked the manager not to let anyone other than the person who would be copying them see them, he takes a peek and says he understands and we go to the store next door to get some things cause i was leaveing on a trip to vegas.

when we come back he has the photos ready, and as we are leaveing he says. do you mind me asking, but is that some sort of sick science experiment.

at that point she instantly lost it, it took me all of my power from keeping her from going at the guy. she starts screaming at him thats my child you ass hole. (among other choice words) i just told her that he wasnt worth it.

he let us have the copies for free other than he had no real choice since she was about to kill him over the comment he made

moral of the story, watch what you say about anything especially when it comes to death, suicide, miss carriage or other things.
