I didn't always know what those lined areas meant, so I was probably sucky in the past without meaning to. But if someone told me, especially the woman NEEDING that space, I certainly would have apologized and moved the hell outta there. Shame on that woman for being such a jerk. And yelling Merry Christmas at the same time? May karma bit a big chunk out of her ass

Just a suggestion, but you might want to look into seeing if your town has a program for civilian parking enforcement. Just google "volunteer police enforcement" and your town name or call your local precinct. That way you can help solve the problem and this won't happen in the future.

Green SUV Woman makes me angry. I'd like to see how people like her would react if they had to spend even one day with a handicap like blindness or having to use a wheelchair. I wonder if they'd learn anything or if they'd just complain even more.

I really don't see what the rude woman's race has to do with anything.

I didn't even see "minority" in the post until someone pointed it out.
        ...
I thought rerant was being funny, making a joke that suggested drunkenwildmage was being racist by calling her a "Green SUV Woman."
        ...
I almost turned to ask my wife if "green" was a racial slur I'd never heard of.
        ...
I still think it's kinda funny.

I have seen people yell at the father in law about parking in the handicap spaces before. They see a regular man getting out and walking into the store. What they dont see is the fact that there is nothing below the knee on both legs.

He at least keeps a sense of humor about it all. I especially love the t-shirt he wears that reads " I am not a complete @sshole, Some parts are missing" of when he says he is a liar.....he has no leg to stand on'

I'm sure that the mother of the sucky woman, for whom she was waiting, was ever so proud of her daughter at that point in time. Of course, it's always possible that is who she learned that nasty habit from, who knows? I just know it sucked on all levels possible.

I'm not sure on this, so if the idea is incorrect, please ignore it. If a van opens to use the space with lines beside it, it doesn't need the end of that space to be open, does it? If the authorities put one or two of those large, yellow cement/steel posts where people might try to pull in, that should stop that practice in a hurry, while still allowing the vans access to open and people to move freely out of that lined space. Maybe? Just a thought.

I could have sworn that any space with lines in it = no parking. It could be that it's needed for handicap access, safety access, etc. And if you are parking in anything marked handicapped & you are not, then you are in the wrong.

I can see one scenario in which waiting in your car in or next to the handicapped spot is not total suckage. If you are waiting for someone else who does have problems and if you are ready to move if/when someone else needs that spot.

This lady may not have failed on the 1st count but she critically failed on the 2nd.

It's a very good chance that the lines in question were painted in blue and white, which indicates they are there for the purpose in the OP and are considered part of the handicapped parking area. Vans that are equipped with those lifts need a lot of room to operate. So, we have an area, marked in blue/white hashed lines, perhaps even with the handicapped symbol painted inside them, next to a handicapped spot. Yet, she thinks it's not illegal? Epic fail.

I do have to admit to occasionally being a little bit in the striped area, but that's because sometimes it's awfully hard to maneuver into the space itself. And before anybody says anything, yes, both I and DH have handicap parking plates. At times, when we ride together, I would rather use both spaces so that we both have room to get in and out of the vehicle, but I do try to stay in the main space as much as possible.
Everything will be ok in the end. If it's not ok, it's not the end.

There's a shop near my house that has a parking space with the standard handicap sign, and underneath that is an additional sign that says "Laziness is not a handicap." I almost pulled into that spot only because I didn't think it was handicap parking, and when I saw that sign, I laughed really hard, then parked elsewhere.

*blinkblink* What? What race? I don't see race mentioned in the least teeny tiny little bit. Sure, you can stretch it, but all that was mentioned was a minority. That could be race, that could be some form of disablement, that could be something about sexual orientation or even a type of religion.

You have no way of knowing if race was even actually what was meant, and you're jumping on the OP for mentioning that the SC was of a minority?

                            Wow. Just ... wow.
Well before the post was edited it mentioned that normally the OP doesn't like to this of people in racial terms, but this incident made it difficult to think otherwise.

So yeah... it's not like I pulled that out of thin air.

But it has been edited now so yeah... whatever.

I'd like to point anyone having issue with the original mention to Raps's post, made a while back in Site News. you'll notice that not only does it say we won't crack down on every mention of minority, but to report it if you feel it crosses the line. No one reported that. Instead we got a report of the thread being derailed by people focusing on that. He's "fixed" it now, so get back on track people, and in the future, if you have a problem with someone mentioning race/minority, report it.
                            Noted.

I've heard of services like that in other cities, but with the current political environment in this town I doubt it would fly.. The Mayor and city council are more concerned with bike paths, a new arena, putting up "pride" signs every 10 feet, Then stuff that would make sense. Besides, last year the Mayor got caught parking in Handicap spots illegally, so he doesn't want to start up a service that would get himself into more trouble..if that's possible.

Before we got the van, Since we both are youngish, and at the time had a Pick-up or Ford ZX2 that we both drove... we always got those dirty stares from people when we pulled into handicap stops, until the wheelchair came out.. then they would have a slight "oh shit" look, then turn away.

My wife wants to get a sticker that says something like "Laziness is not a handicap, get out of my parking spot" Put on on the van, and one on her chair.

It's not a bad idea, but the problem is, there really isn't a standard location for the ramp door on a van. For the most part, the ramp is on the passenger side sliding door, but I have seen vans/Mini-buses that have them coming out the side behind the rear wheels. For the minivans, they also make a rear ramp model, which would eliminate the need for the "extra space"but that is only for transport. In our case, the drivers seat comes out, so my wife can drive if she wants to. Another downside is that allot of people will have either a lift or carried that hangs off the back of there vehicle or the chair, and this would block access to that. On the truck that we used to have, we had a carrier that attached to the trailer hitch. I would help my wife get in the truck, and then I would put it on the carrier, and tie the chair down with straps. One of the funnest looks I got from a mechanic was when I asked to have hand controls installed in a Dodge Dakota.
Just sliding down the razor blade of life.
