Don't sign the write up. Take notes on any and all interactions that follow. You can never have too much evidence.

And, if your company treats their employees like that, why do you wanna be management with them?

I definately would refuse to sign any write ups, you have witnesses to what happened and even your manager says he doesn't believe this nutball so I would tell them to cram their write up. If they tried to pressure/threaten you into signing something.......well wouldn't a teary eyed worker wrongly being punished by a big evil company be just the thing a story-hungry local news station would be all over?

      Food for thought.

Is there an appeals process that you can go through after the write up? With the security guard and the oter staff you can prove that loony guy is making it all up then you can have the write up taken off your record.
A PSA, if I may, as well as another.

Do not sign the write-up, and refuse to speak with this psycho customer any time they call from now on.

I understand how someone can make you crack. I got really used to being called a bitch, a stupid bitch, a twat, a cunt, a fucking brat, etc etc, on a daily basis (For carding people, mind you) and yet every once in a while, just one person calling me that would make me shake and shed a tear.

I don't know about this whole 'write-up' thing. Where I work, we have 'conversations', which have a section for putting in your bit, agreed outcomes, and then for signing.

About the last time I had one, because my TL didn't want to listen to my side, I wrote 'I DON'T AGREE' across the bit where she wanted me to sign. Then she decided to listen to what I had to say, and then took most of it back, and put it down to a miscommunication

If you don't have that option of putting your side down on the form, then write something on it which indicates that you have read it, but also that what is written down is crap. They'll have to keep it on file, and if it pops up again later, at least there's something on it to indicate all is not as it first appears (which is what would happen whether it is signed or not). And there's nothing saying you can't do a big scrawl all across the page if you want to, depending on what is written.

As others have said, if they're going to pull you down cos management is crap, then do you want to work there??

We used to have manager like the Corp people you describe, One particular SC would always complain and usually get stuff for free. Even if we were following the Corp. rules about product placement and quantity down to the letter. After the complaint the manager would call the employee(s) ins question to the office and give them a talk about "customer service." That manager was fired for stealing from the store last year. To my knowledge no one was ever written up from her.

it's things like this that make me dream of getting a high position in one of these companies and going to town on every ass hole like this that gets good people fired for no good reason.

Sue him, he wants to complain you threw something at him, throw him a lawsuit!

Hopefully the media doesn't paint the retail worker as a monster, like it usually does.

Yeah, I think that is crap. They shoulnd't write you up simply cuz ONE customer says you are a bad seed. You had someone else already say that the customer seemed a bit off. You have evidence right there.

The job I had before this one was screwed up. I was written up 2 times in one day because my supervisor was "a Hitler". My manager at the time said she had no choice but to write me up (even though she had no problems with me ever) just because I finally had had enough with the supervisor (whom I would have been the supervisor of if I were full-time) and told her off one day. I refused sign both of them & quit the same day. Oddly enough, my manager quit the same day as well & within a year the store was closed.

When I have recieved a write-up for something I thought was false, I say so.
There is almost always a spot for employee comments, and I write something in there like, "This accusation is false, the incident described never happened."

I agree with documenting everything in case you need to take him to court. He's guilty of libel. If possible, get a copy of the complaint letter.

You know, the more I read the stories here, the more I think someone needs to write a book.

Yes, I was going to say the same thing. Not only dont' sign it, but keep close documentation. Lying in such a way as to harm your work reputation and chances for advancement are something you can hit him with a lawsuit over.

I would sue him in small claims court for it myself. But then again I am a vindictive person
If you could have any way to prove that his complaint ever causes you loss of a raise or promotion, then he is guilty of slander and can be prosecuted for any lost wages/compensation (and likely also for court costs) as well as that his false statements be acknowledged and stricken where applicable.

Regardless of anything else you do, document, document, document. Keep copies of everything, especially any disciplinary actions or notices.

You must work for one of them "The customer is always right" companies huh?

Because I can't imagine any others would give you a write up over that.
Sad to say in today's retail environment, that is becoming more the more common attitude. They'll believe anything a customer says about an employee but the employee complains that they feel a customer is being nasty to them it's dismissed as not important. Employees are expendable and SCs are valued. Go figure.

One bitchy SC complained to management that I took too long counting her pile of ones to verify that she had given me the exact amount as her bill and said I was disrespectful towards her because I did that which I do for everyone who gives me multiple ones. When I got written up for legitimate reasons, the head manager tried to tack that incident on to it, which I vigorously protested and won that argument. Ever since then, she avoids my lane even mine is the only one open and acts as if my continued employment is causing her grievous harm. Get over it lady - I was just doing my job.

Get a statement from security and your co-worker. Then sue the company you work for. The company has clearly exposed you to emotinal trama.
If the guy comes back and sees you there he could get violent. Clearly the company doesn't care about you or your physical well being.
I agree with the previous post's Don'y Sign the write-up. You have witnesses! You did nothing wrong! It's not your fault he's mentally un-stable WTF are they thinking?

Our employee turnover is something like 97%....
                                Jeez, I wonder why?

That's exactly how it was when I worked for the cable company, which I did not stay at for long. Their attitude was the customer is always right. If someone said you were rude, then you were rude. They would not even listen to your side of the story.

Needless to say, they also have a high turnover rate.

Yep, time for you to look for another job. That sounds like a horrible place to work at.
