What about the idiots that like to park in the fire lane in front of a store? I see that all the frickin' time and it irritates me.

Preaching to the choir, here. I hate that with a passion. That and parking in handicapped spots with no plates or placard.

Is it really legal to block people's cars in if they park on your property? Of course if you block them in with your own car(s) you can always claim you didn't have a choice, but what if you decided to put a boot on it? And if the trespassers do manage to get the police to come ask you to move your car all just say "Officer I've had a few drinks so clrealy I can't drive." What cop is going to order a drunk person to drive!
If they're on your property without your permission, then it's tresspassing, and they need to move it. You certainly can't vandalize the vehicle or do anything to it, but if you block them in, even intentionaly, there isn't a single law you're breaking. It's not illegal to put your stuff anywhere you want on your property, including behind the offending persons car. The cop in the above situation would just force the drunk person to have a seat while they called a tow truck to remove the vehicle.

At my high school, they charged $100 a year to park in their lot. It didn't matter when you signed up either; whether it be at the beginning or middle of the year, it was always $100.

Here's the problem: This lot was horrible. Potholes everywhere, the thing was made of gravel, not asphalt, and the spaces where not clearly marked with paint. Where was the money going to? It was supposed to go towards the upkeed of the lot but obviously wasn't. That pissed the dickens out of me. Worse is, this was a very affluent school. People were driving brand new BMW's and CAdillacs to school on this ripped up lot.

Back on topic, one of my friends transferred to the school mid-year and refused to pay the $100 since he only would use the lot half the time as the regular students, so he just parked in a nearby neighborhood. Instead of blocking off a driveway, he would park inbetween houses, so that he wouldn't piss off one neighbor, but two,

        Olive juice you too.

That's one expensive parking spot. The fire boys were nice there. They could have just flipped the car out of the way.

Maybe it's me, but I really don't see a problem with parking on the street between houses. He is not blocking anybody, he isn't on anybody's property, didn't sound like he was on the grass...just on the street. No problem, if you ask me. (For some reason, so few people ever do....)

the problem with that is if its a street that isnt meant to be parked on, ie having driveways, having a car parked on one or both sides makes it very difficult to use that street especially if its near a turning spot

Even if it's "just a minute," that "minute" you take to get your cheese could be the "minute" a fire breaks out in the store and a fire truck needs to get in that big, space you are occupying in the front of store to put out said fire. The stores don't mark these areas for fun!
People are BIG time offenders at my work for this - just park right in front of the store, walk in, get their photos and leave. Heaven forbid you have to walk another 20 steps to the parking lot - and since half the stores are empty or under construction in our plaza right now, there are ALWAYS close spots.

Of course, the police (two different cities) do this too.

I could be wrong, but I do believe the police are allowed to do this, at least in their official vehicles, as they are, of course, emergency vehicles. And let's face it, of all vehicles parked in a fire lane, don't you think the cops would move their cops the quickest if there was need for them to do so? Especially since they have radios and all.

Of course, if they are doing that off duty in their private vehicles, that is another story.

I may be observing a biased sample but at the stores where I shop, the fire-lane violators skew heavily toward folks driving very expensive cars. BMW's and Lexuses (Lexi?) mostly, the Mercedes folks seem less SC. The worst was a guy in a Ferrari who parked RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE ENTRY DOORS. This market has no sidewalk separating the entry from the parking area, he just drove up, and his car activated the automatic doors, he was that close!!

Living in a college town in a house very close to the big 110,000 seat football stadium meant many long battles with people parking infront of or even in my drive way.

I tried tow trucks, angry letters, vengence, etc to get them to stop but they never would simply because it was a new person every week.

Then I found my answer. Every Saturday morning I put up a sign that said

                          PARKING $20

                          They never came back.

I was not very impressed with these people having their entitlement issues about "owning" part of a public street. Keep in mind, when I say public street, I mean a street where everyone parks on the street as common practice, pretty much wherever they can, as long as they are not parked in a No Parking zone or blocking a driveway. Urgh.
My goofball neighbors like to do that to people. Whenever there's a party, or cars parked in the street, they'll get both of their cars, and put them in front of their house...simply so someone can't park there. It doesn't matter if someone is parked *across* the street from them, they'll do it anyway and block the street. I could understand if the cars were on their grass, or blocking their driveway...but last time I checked, it was a public street!

The best is when they'd leave nasty notes on people's windshields (usually of cars of kids visiting their friends down the street) threatening to call the cops...and then couldn't understand why *their* cars would get vandalized immediately afterwards. My parents and several neighbors got the notes, I didn't. They tend to leave me alone for some reason. I'm not sure if it's because of the "don't f*ck with me* aura I give off, or simply because I'd work on cars in the driveway

They have called the cops on people for parking there, but unless the cars are on the grass, the cops simply tell them there's "not a damn thing they can do about it" and leave.

And yes, if I'm moving cars around, I will leave one there a few minutes just to torque them off

As far as the fire lane goes, my mom did that on occasion, but only when my dad or I was also in the car to wait in the driver's seat so we could move it pronto if there was a problem (like a firetruck coming up). Still worried the crap out of me when I was the backup driver, though.
