Darwin???? Why would you choose to live in Darwin??? I think Darwin from Nova Scotia would kill you.

Btw - you are aware of the drive-thru, aren't you? (that's drive-thru liquor barns )
Clearly, you've never been to Nova Scotia. What's so terrible about Darwin? I know nothing of it (yet) beyond the fact that my company formed a partnership with another company there and has an office that is listed in the company directory. But isn't it, like, the backside of beyond as far as Australian cities go?

And drive-thru liquor stores aren't new around here. Not that there's a LOT of them, but I know at least three within 50kms of me. None of them are close enough to be worth the drive. Besides, part of the fun of a trip to the NSLC (Nova Scotia Liquor Commission - all alcohol is government-regulated here) is browsing the racks with all the pretty bottles on them. Because I don't have a drinking problem...I have a SHINY problem. Especially colored glass or glass with colored liquid in it.

I'd say go for Melbourne we have great food but then all of Australia has great food if you know where to look.
I actually have a couple of Aussie cookbooks that have kept me fascinated for a couple of years now. You guys have a weird habit of putting BEETS on everything, though. I love beets, but I'm not yet sure that they really go with burgers, personally. Can you mix horseradish with beetroot, do you think?

and I didn't even mention ... the traditional Christmas morning lobster breakfast...
Now there's a tradition I hadn't heard of. I don't even celebrate Christmas, but I love lobster, so I think I'm going to adopt this tradition. Any special recipe you use?
"I look at the stars. It's a clear night and the Milky Way seems so near. That's where I'll be going soon. "We are all star stuff." I suddenly remember Delenn's line from Joe's script. Not a bad prospect. I am not afraid. In the meantime, let me close my eyes and sense the beauty around me. And take that breath under the dark sky full of stars. Breathe in. Breathe out. That's all."

Of course you can! The Ashkenazim have been doing it for generations. It's called chrain (for an approximate pronunciation, make a Scots ch and say the name of the River Rhine) -- and it's just the thing to go with gefilte fish.

Eating seafood on Christmas day is a great Australian tradition, my family tend to go for lobster for breakfast. Just the standard boiled lobster with seafood cocktail sauce (which you can either buy in jars labeled "seafood cocktail sauce" or make by mixing equal parts mayo and ketchup).

            Hmmm - Darwin... wiki entry

I suggest looking at the bit on the right - where it lists ave. MIN temp (say, in mid winter, and the coldest it's ever going to get!) as being 23.2C / 70F... and ave MAX temps of 32C/90F... that's the average - doesn't indicate the high 30's+ that it will hit every so often.

Not to mention average humidity is pretty high.

Check out the bit on climate, and the graph there.

So - going from Nova Scotia.. yeah, I think you'll notice it... it doesn't get cold (or dry).*

Darwin gets a cyclone, oh, about a couple a season....

Oh, and yes, it is miles from anywhere, so don't expect to be seeing any of your favourite bands any time soon - Darwin always misses out (unless it's an Aussie band...)

But... you do have immediate access to Kakadu! And not that far from the Daintree... (bit of a flight, though.) Oh, and the Kimberley's. And Broome (for the dolphins)... and crocs. And lots of Barramundi!!

Now, if you came a bit further south (and, preferably, east) things would be great

            Doesn't beetroot go with everything????

            * I admit, I only just googled NS, and found how warm it can get... I am surprised!! The cold didn't, though
When I said "From my research", what I actually meant to say was "Made shit up" - from a thottbot thread

Forget the high 30's in Darwin, be worried about the mid 40's it gets to some times.

edible_hat, I'm wondering now if we've met and not known it.

Still impressive given the size of membership here to find 3 of us.
