  • Uhhggg Tobacco Tax

As most of you know in the USA there was a major tobacco tax added today.

We use to sell these little cigars for $0.74 a pack or $7.32 a carton after tax. Today they went to $2.05 a pack and $20+ after tax. I warned EVERYONE that the tax was coming and to buy as much as they could for the last month or two. They all kept telling me there was no way it was going to go that high. They would say theres no way they can add that much tax.

Most people came in and seen the new price and asked if I was kidding. When told no they would either buy or leave. Not this one SC. No she stood there yelling at me asking how the heck they can go up over 200% just like that.

Now our boss had people come in and change our entire store. We now have to get customers EVERYTHING but pop and candy bars. Everything is all messed up and I was frustrated at that point.

I told her ma'am dont yell at me, I warned you all it was coming. Call and yell at your state rep, congressman, or even the president. But do not yell at me I didnt add the tax. She b*tched some more then left.

Come on now, not only did we warn our customers by telling them AND putting up signs, but the tax has been on the news the last 2 or 3 days around here. If you didn't stock up then its NOT our problem. Theres been two or three "check" days since we started telling them. "Check days" are social security and welfare check days....

And lets not even go into the bags of roll-your-own cigarette tobacco.. We are out of almost all of it except some menthol. People bought it up and our whole seller stopped buying it and limited all stores to the amount they could get because of the tax. Again people were warned but they didnt believe us.... Now we get to hear them complain because we are out.

Oh and yeah go ahead and drive to the next state over. Guess what they got the same tax so its still only a few dollars cheaper and you will waste that in gas. You dont understand what the FEDERAL in federal tax means?

    I completely understand.

People come in and bitch at me about the cigarette prices going up, when I try (in vain) to tell them it was not my fault, or even the store's fault, it's a FEDERAL tax. Not us. Not our fault. Don't yell at me. Either buy the more expensive cancer sticks, or don't.

Hasn't it been percolating through the houses for months/years now? How could people not know it was coming? I mean, if you're addicted to something, wouldn't you pay attention to what's happening with its price?

oh wait, silly me... pay attention. riiight.

Huh. I guess it's because I don't smoke, but I had no idea this happened. Maybe I should crawl out from under my rock of obliviousness more often.

I'm gonna dread coming to work Friday since lucky I am off the day it went up and my boss had to deal with customers pissing and moaning about the tax hike.

We all warned them in advance to stock up, some took heart to it while others continued to buy just one pack a day, like usual.

One thing I am glad about is that this turd raised holy hell on the last tax hike 2 months ago won't be back anytime soon. He was screaming at the top of his lungs. Luckly the cops was just outside hanging ten with a cop buddy. (I'm equally glad I wasn't even there, poor co-worker had to deal with it.)

Cops escorted his ass out of the store after being told he's banned from the premises permanantly.

Hope we won't have another episode like that again.

I hate cig tax hikes, it brings out the worse in people.

$8 for a pack of marlboro???? Come to the UK SCs!!! We've been paying at least $8.45 (according to online currency converter) for at least 3 years, in fact far more before the pound became so weak.

You could ship them all over and they would expire with the effort of complaining, while sullen-faced English salespeople looked at them without sympathy.

I believe you need a license if you're going to grow more than like 1 or 2 plants. Not entirely sure, it's been a couple years since I read the regulation.

Thank god I quit this year, and haven't had an urge at all to pick it back up. I haven't had a smoke since December.

People like that need to quit making excuses and being so ignorant, and above all, quit throwing fits at convenience stores. Even if you are one of those types of people who doesn't read newspapers or watch the news, talk about this giant tax hike in cigarettes has been going on since last fall, at least in Wisconsin it has. In January 2008, they added a $1 tax, making brands like Marlboro and Camel a little over $4 a pack. Then in the last couple of months, it's went up to about $6 a pack, now probably $7 (I stocked up the other day, I'm good until next week).

The poor convenience store clerk is not the person who raised the taxes to ridonkulous rates. Neither is the owner, or even the company itself.

I just find it disturbing that it costs me exactly $5 (until they raise the prices again) to clog my arteries and risk me gaining weight, but it's now $7 or better to give myself lung cancer one day.

                          why not tobacco too?

I can't make anything grow to save my life but if I smoked I think I'd be looking at trying to grow my own tobacco...

Probably better anyway, without all the additives and whatnot though I would guess you'd smoke more to get the same amount of nicotine.

depends... not all of the additives contain nicotine
                              Tar for example.

So yeah, it might actually be a purer smoke.
