OK. I've been following this thread and, as a former D&D player from 30 years ago, I feel justified in saying...

We referred to it as "throwing 2D6". And, no, "throwing" is not figurative.
Inflicting physical pain for rules lawyering. Sounds like my kinda group.

Thanks to this thread and its contents, I have a created a new saying for my DM (and bestest freind) to aid her in her continued DM-ing ways:

"This is D&D, not ADD&D! Now stop standing on your head and NO it is not your turn yet!"

As soon as we got home she wrote it on the back of her GM partition. We...uh... have two players that don't know when to SHUT UP and but in on everyone elses turns.

Thanks to some rule changes, that is about to be a BAD idea (loss of exp, everything said in play, turns taken away if player goes to far and to long off topic etc). To bad I'm mvoing at the end of next week and won't be here to watch the glory that will be that one players cake hole shut! yes, he's fun, but he's WAY to excited, and he knows he's not supposed to behave that way.

.... *sigh*.... but I'll be across the country, looking for a new group.

.... anyone DM in the boonies of Newfoundland?

Geek King, can I be in your RP group? Pretty Please?

I promise that I create interesting characters and never rules-lawyer.

Ah, the tale of Eric and the Gazebo. A stirring story from the far reaches of time, before 1986, when it was officially published for the very first time.

My ex used to GM games all the time, including TFOS and the like. We once ran a side-by-side Paranoia adventure where we had to keep in contact because each of the teams we were running was actually working against the other.

Anyway, he kept a set of Hit Dice. They were large foam dice, and if you annoyed him enough to throw one at you, you took whatever damage the die was showing when it stopped moving.

I'm close but sadly not that close. And I don't DM and I've never played a RL game of D&D. My group plays on IRC every Sunday and Tuesday. Considering my group has someone in Toronto, Fredericton, Trinidad, Atlanta, San Diego, and Indianapolis (and probably other areas, I'm not sure where some of our players actually live) we're a bit too spread out to get in place for a RL game. In fact, I never met my GM in person until this past summer, and we've known eachother for 13 years now.

                      Ah, the memories....

My favorite application of Rule Zero was to drop a handful of dice behind my DM screen while staring at the player and calmly announce the results of the dice roll without looking. Most often this was in response to Mark "I will never miss a secret door" Holmes and his never ending searching for secret and concealed doors. It got old.

I ran a short campaign with a guy who would deliberately walk away from whatever story I had planned and force me to make it all up on the fly. While there were a few flashes of brilliance down that road, it was mostly a very painful and frustrating experience.

I miss being a DM, but I am hoping my son will get into it some day so I can run a group for him. What I won't miss are the A-holes, munchkins, socially inept and unwashed losers (seriously, nerds - take a damn shower and put on clean clothes before you go gaming for 6 hours,) and maladjusted freaks who think it's a good idea to roll for "schlong size."
                      Hmm...more zombies than usual...

So would you describe that pipe as about 50% real?
Just in case anybody doesn't understand french, the picture reads, "This is not a pipe," and it's not a pipe, it's a picture of a pipe

Used to love that when I was in high school, had it pasted into my art class sketchbook and everything.

Sure. I'm not running right now, but I can set you up in one of our regular groups. Of course, we're in the Southern Ohio area, in the vicinity of Middletown and South Dayton. OH, we also tend to oddball games like Mekton Zeta, Rolemaster, and such. Currently playing: Rolemaster set in Middle Earth in the times leading up to the beginning of the events in Lord of the Rings; Car Wars & GURPS; and Shadowrun universe done up in the Cyberpunk/Mekton rules. We're also looking to start up (sometime in the next few months) a classic T.M.N.T game, possibly modern-day or After the Bomb. Send me a PM if interested.

I love when PCs figure out novel uses for spells and skills. Now, I will admit that sometimes I have to say no to certain things, but I mainly do that if something really skews game balance. Please note, if the PCs can do something unusual, there is no reason that word won't get around. It may not be long before the PCs start having their own tactics used against them.

I've said it before, but I'll repeat it here. If you are a GM, or thinking about running your own game, you need to read the Game Master's Guide from a game called 7th Sea. John Wick wrote some of the best GM tips in that book I've ever seen, and most of them can be taken into other games. I believe he's also written some good articles for Pyramid Magazine, online at Steve Jackson Games.

*chuckle* Do we have a thread in Off Topic for DND/RPG stories? I did a search but nothing seemed to jump out at me as one. I could try and type out a couple of my more memerable actions if I can remember them. Just don't want to derail this thread too much more.

I believe the gaming thread would work well for that. After all, it's still gaming. No reason it can't go in there.

As for D&D, I'm told I play a very convincing Kender...
