Nekojin & I bought a used car not too long ago, and it came with a single, very worn, slightly twisted key. I'm actually shocked that it still starts the car (the ignition switch must be extremely forgiving).

We decided we needed at least one spare so we called up the nearest dealership, confirmed that they could cut us new keys from their master list, and had two made up.

You may be right about some customers not understanding how one key blank would work instead of another. The time I took a Schlage SC-8 key to a Home Depot and the guy insisted it was a standard SC-1, I finally had to walk out of there without my copies.

As for chip keys, there was the time I brought my Toyota key to get an unchipped copy to stick in my wallet. (I've locked my keys in my car before and it's nice to be able to open the door.) It absolutely blew the guy's mind, he looked like a deer in headlights. "But... But... But... ...We can't duplicate these!"

Ouch. I feel for you. :-/ I know how devious those SC-8s are. They have a lot of variations. I don't blame the key guy one bit. Sometimes they're new, and aren't familiar with all the possible variations on these keys. One of the newbies I'm training fell into that trap the other day.

One of them even did some sort of subtraction on the blanks. That was REALLY weird. Like, he somehow managed to take an SC-15 in his hand, then take the customer's SC-7 on the desk, and somehow ended up with an SC-6. I was looking at him completely bewildered as he held up the key for me triumphantly. I quickly pushed him away from the service desk and told him to get some lunch before he hurt his head thinking too hard about it.

Aww man. :-/ Did you get him to see the light of day?
SC: "Are you new or something?"
Me: "Yes. Your planet is very backwards I hope you realize."
