Another story that absolutely destroys my faith in humanity.
We had a booking for 20, and I was just getting everything ready for them. They arrived 90 minutes early, and were sucky as soon as they got through the door. They were appaulled that I could not sit them down right away, and stood at the bar glaring at me as I tried to move people around to make room for them. A co-worker walked up to me.
CW: Customersruinmylife, phone, it's urgent.
It's my sister. She is absolutely distraught. She says that my mum has collapsed in the house and won't get up, and has hurt herself as she fell. She is screaming, crying, and doesn't know what to do. I tell her to phone for an ambulance right away, and then go get our neighbour, who is a nurse. I assure her that I am on my way home right away.
I walk out, and I am starting to panic. I have grabbed all my things. I drop a list of phone numbers next to a co-worker.
Me: I am sorry, I've got to go. My mum's collapsed and my sister is on her own, my dad's away at the minute. She's only 15, I need to go home. Call another manager and get them in, because...I can't, I can't stay.
I am full on stammering, tears are in my eyes.
CW: Don't worry, just go.
The SC piped up.
SC: Uhhh...excuse me? You can't leave!
I ignore her and start for the exit.
SC: You have a booking you know!
I don't look back.
SC: HEY! WHAT ABOUT US!?!?
Me: I DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT YOU!!!!!
She was at the bar when I walked out and she DEFINATELY heard what I said about my mum.
My mum is OK though. She has been ill recently and is on medication. She is meant to take this medication after meals, but she has not been eating well, and it all got a bit much and she collapsed. I got home at the same time the ambulance was there, and she was already up and walking about, wondering what all the fuss was about! My sister was an absolute wreck though. I decided not to bother going back into work. It's my last week, I don't care.
