I was working that day and remember the internet being jammed for about 2 hours. Couldn't get any news. Someone rolled one of the TVs into the conference room. The most surreal part was looking up in the sky and seeing one aircraft circling in a lazy circle...((hmmm). A couple days later, a couple of F-16's flew over the building to intercept a hospital flight that didn't realize a complete ground hold meant just that.

The thing is, I look at these SC stories on 9/11 and think I should loose faith in humanity... but all I see is the fireman who kept going in for more people until he didn't come back. I can't loose faith in humanity.

I was working in an HMO call center in Wisconsin that morning, so I saw the first news flashes at home, and arrived at work just before the second plane hit. We also had a TV in the break room, plus web access at our desks. Call volume was light, and most of the callers were more interested in talking about what was going on, rather than the issue they had called about. Then, I get home from work to find out a good friend from high school was missing from 2WTC.
Here is where the suck comes in. 3 days later, I get called into my sup's office. I then get written up for the results of call monitoring she did the morning of 9/11. Things like 'not focusing on the member', 'not controlling the call', 'excessive call times', junk like that. I was just totally in shock as she went through her little spiel. She concludes by telling me she was disappointed in me, and she had thought I was more professional.
When I turned in my notice a week later, they just couldn't understand why.

I am sorry for your loss, as well as the losses of other posters here....
I heard about the WTC from Howard Stern on my way to work. I can't tell you how shocked I was. When I arrived at work, they had the radio on and everyone was quiet and listening to it. I worked at Kinko's at the time, and it was heartbreaking over the next few weeks to have folks bring in missing posters of their loved ones to copy, or the firemen who would bring in the poster they put in the Philadelphia Inquirer of all of the firemen that were lost to be laminated. Of course, we did all of those things for them for free. Even more heartbeaking was to see some folks that had brought missing posters to us return with funeral programs. I'm not surprised that some folks were sucky during that time, but it makes me wonder where humanity and compassion have gone sometimes.Dammit !! ~ Jack Bauer
