  • Oblivious Cell Phone Customer

Yesterday, I was checking out a customer who was talking on her cell phone throughout the whole transaction. She handed me cash for part of the amount and it took me a few tries to let her know that she still owed money. When I told the customer the original amount, she handed me more money. She was still on the cell phone when she left.

The customer ended up bumping into the FEM and some soda spilled on the ground. The FEM ended up having to replace her soda.

We now have signs posted at the till and the counter of the store that says

"to respect your privacy and to provide quality service we will not serve you till you have finished your mobile phone call"

Now when a customer approaches us talking on their phone we just point to the sign and turn the other way or serve someone else. Has worked like a charm so far.

Grrr. I HATE customers like that. They come in and toss their ID and CC at me, and are just chatting away on their phone. Um, do you need smoking or non? Upstairs or down? I can't ask these questions if you're chatting with someone else!

To date, I've had ONE customer ask if it was okay to answer his cell in the middle of the transaction, and since he was a regular and I already knew exactly what he wanted I let him answer it (it was an important call and he was very apologetic).

It really pisses me off too. Sometimes I just pretend not to notice thier phone, and just keep right on asking the usual questions. It's funny to see them get mad or flustered. I mean what are they going to do write an email that says:

        To whom it may concern,

I was at your store last night and had a very unfortunate encounter with one of your cashiers RavenStarr.

RavenStarr was very RUDE!!! I was on my cellphone and she kept interupting me. She kept asking questions like how are you, did you find everything ok, credit or debit, would you like a carryout?

Now I know I may come across as a rude cell phone customer, but dammitt my phone call happened to be very important. It just so happens I was talking with a friend about my hemmoroids, and what kind of butt cream I should use.

People like her really chaps my hide.

        Sincerely,
        Mr. Buttram

My apologies to anyone who has ever suffered from hemmoroids. I know that can be a pain in the ass........Wait that didn't come out right. I think I'll just shut up now.

That's a very big pet peeve of mine. After I had a customer who very rudely held up a finger to my face and proceeded to take forever to complete her transaction since her stupid phone call was more important, I decided to do something about it.
So whenever I see a customer chatting away on thier cell, if they do not acknowledge me and at least say hi, I ring up their items and simply hand them their receipt without saying a single word. I think a few of them got the hint and didn't do it next time they came in. But there are customers who don't give a shit if you talk to them or not, and so they continue to do it.
Here's an excellent idea.... They should jam up the cell phone signals like at a walmart my best friend works at. Its near impossible to get a signal inside the store. Place pay phones inside the front of the store, and customers will be forced to use the pay phones and won't be able to hold up the lines. That would solve the problem in a hurry!

That's great, until you have someone miss an urgent emergency call and someone dies.

When someone walks in *the Sports Bar* with their cell phone plastered to their ear I don't talk to them until they approach the host stand. If the person is still yakking on the cell, and wanting to be seated, I see if they acknoweledge me. If they are being rude and just hold up a finger, I make it a POINT to say rather loudly: " WELCOME TO *THE SPORTS BAR* HOW MANY TODAY??? NICE WEATHER WE'RE HAVING TODAY, EH? DO YOU PERFER A TABLE OR BOOTH?!? EITHER ONE, YOUR CHOICE! WHICH WILL IT BE?!?
It either confuses them or pisses them off, both of which are funny to watch.
I have to admit, it doesn't happen much and most people will either end the call before getting seated or temporarily put the caller on hold and talk to me like a civilized person though

That's just a problem that one store has. They work just fine at mine....unfortunately.

Some people just don't seem to care if they get the right medications or need to know what to do with them.

You can't "selectively" jam cell phones. They don't work that way. And I'm fairly certain the situations he was talking about were: attempting to call on-call personnel, contact parent for medical history, and similar. You know, times when 911 isn't much help.

Jeeze Louise! Doesn't anyone remember life before cellphones?!? People managed to get by just fine for thousands of years without having to be in contact with everyone in their little black book list 24/7.

Is there an emergency when you're in a store? Guaranteed the store has land lines to call emergency services.

Need to be able to be contacted in a *real* emergency (sick kids, family accident, whatever), get a pager and carry fifty cents for a payphone. Yes, payphones still exist, and they're good for more than just calling in bomb threats to your high school.

The electronic leash that people call cell phones may make some people's lives easier, but between the increased driving hazard and general rudeness of users doesn't justify their proliferation.

Grrr. Stopping before I get into fratching territory.

OMG! I want that sign for the counter at the c-store!! I hate, hate, HATE it when a customer is yakking away on their phone at the counter! It boils my blood, especially when they mouth or whisper their request (ie "marb reds") to you! Grrr!! I actually thank people for hanging up or saying "Just a minute" to the people on the other end of the line!

I'll admit I've been guilty of this once before.

I found out some rather bad news (nothing life or death, but still bad) about a relative of mine and I held my phone up to my ear. I waved to the cashier but did not speak to her. She didn't talk either during the transaction, which I can't say I blame her for. Since we were co-workers, I made it a point to apologize to her the next time I saw her and explained what happened at the time. She shrugged it off like it was no big deal. I guess she was used to getting that.

ETA: I had the day off from that place and had stopped in to shop.
