I am sorry but I am with the customer on this one.

Your behaviour giving out the sex line number is inexcuseable as is the attitude of the business owner.

With an attitude like that she does not deserve to be in business at all.

In my book, setting someone up with a prank that ends up costing them money is not funny and is as wrong as the SC who tries to rip off a company with bogus returns.

Don't phone sex numbers have a recording to let you know beforehand what you're paying for?
Okay I had to do the math...he said a 25 dollar call.

.99 cents the first minuet and 1.99 for each additional (usual rate around here) = 13 minuets More then long enough to realize that he was given a bad number and to hang up with not getting charge anymore. The lines around here (I worked for one for a short stint) tell you up front who you have called so he didn't even need to spend a minuet on the phone.

So what do you suggest she do for the ones who refuse to believe policy and that there is no one higher?

No you don't give in but neither do you give customers false information. Giving that number was at very least irresposnible. There can be no excuse for it.

I know the one i work for does. Not to metion you get the whole spiel about being over 18, and the bit about the prices, and the bit about chosing the girl you want, and the intros from the girls themselves, then the connection bit....

But none of that takes 13 minutes (thanks aethian) it takes *calculates* about four or five minutes at the most.

Wonder what he was up to on that line...

Find one for your area code! They are free, so not as bad as the pay porn #.
Oh man, I wish we had those in Australia! Unfortunately, the only thing I know is the rejection hotline for mobile phones (which i think I need to start memorizing for when I'm on the floor). FOr the unfamiliar, when you dial it, it comes up with the following message:

"The person who gave you this number never wants to see you again."

And then it goes on further a bit.

In the case of this one, I'm in two minds.

The first: while giving out a phone sex number was mean, the guy would have realised at some stage that he WAS calling a phone sex line and not corporate. Especially a near-15 minute call.

The second: There does need to be some improvements made as far as that goes...especially if there is a legitimate complaint.

It could have been one of those shady phone services.

I can't remember the exact details, but my parents got burned by a service <tech support> I think. Just calling it got them a $99 charge on the phone line.

they normally ask for a credit card to bill, cell phones can't dial any pay-per-call numbers, and the charge per minutes is explained before a human answers. Could be wrong but I do believe the above rules are per the FCC, so federal law there(I know the cell phone part is FCC mandates)

This is from someone that used to be an extension on a 1-900 line....

Customer trying to scam(guessing game was around $25 as well)
Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

Regarding confusion between tech support and phone sex lines:

Note that this was nearly 13 years ago, when the blog-o-sphere was yet to be thought up and Usenet was all there was. I have no idea if that line is still active or what it costs to dial it.

Ok, I don't think I'd give out a phone sex number when someone demanded corporate, even if they were a giant douchebag about everything, but that whole "cost me $25" line is probably as true as CW telling him he could have a cash refund.

The guy's a liar, through and through, and he deserves what he got.

The 800 number for my store's main office is printed on one of the front windows by the door along with store number and other such general information. I just refer people to that when they want to call the main office for any reason. I rarely have anyone threaten to complain on me, personally. When they do it's usually over some unreasonable request that I can't fulfill by policy or law, or due to some circumstance that is otherwise beyond my control. So, I never worry about those. The most I've ever heard of any such complaints is the manager laughing about it later as she tells me about it, and that the office has decided to ignore it. Aside from that, I figure there is no benefit in giving false information since it is clearly printed where any halfway observant person can see it.

While I'll agree giving a phone sex # wasn't the smartest thing to do, the customer should've realized what number he had called the moment the opening spiel started and not racked up $25 in fees. I can't fathom how he could have *NOT* known what he was doing, especially since there should be more then enough warning before hand that says, "Hey, you're calling a sex line, these are the charges and these are the people that you can chose from.".
Eh, one day I'll have something useful here. Until then, have a cookie or two.

Maybe he (initially) thought that spiel was corporate trying to be funny?

Drat. And here I was all ready to give cudos to your manager until I read that little bit.

I disagree. Those sex lines tell you up front how much you are going to be charged. All he had to do is hang up the line and it wouldn't have cost him a dime.

I don't know about in that area but every corporate number I ever saw started with 800, 866, or 877 which are all free to call and all sex line numbers I've seen are 900's , that tells me the customer should have known what he was calling before he dialled, I think he paid the stupid tax and deserved it, but that's just me.

                                This.

Unless the guy is originally from Nunavut I do not believe for one second he's actually out 25$ on the call. He was just trying to get a handout/a serious sounding case against the store that would hopefully get him some leverage.
