Pagan beat me to it - atholl brose, which is basicly whiskey with a little oatmeal liquid and honey. It'll cure what ails you.

They have it in Venezuela too. Oh my gosh, so good.
I should make my mom some, I forgot about it and I know she loves it. It's what's for breakfast!

In Denmark its called havresuppe, no whiskey, just boil some oatmeal and run it through a sieve. Flavoring is optional but vanilla is good. It's told to be a remedy for diarea.

Mmf... if it's that good I might have to try it. I haven't bought it because oatmeal is one of the cheapest things I can make for breakfast at home, but is the most expensive breakfast item at $tarbucks.

No uisge in the recipe I saw, else I'd not have recalled it at all. I can't drink anymore, so I pay very little attention to alcoholic drinks.

But, sans alcohol, I think that just might be what I saw.

[QUOTE=EmilyRose 1982;677562] I have encountered major stupidity regarding this somewhat delicious hot cereal. [/B]

I do feel mean, but I've never heard of 'oatmeal' as a breakfast cereal. As a cooking ingredient, yes, but to eat on it's own? Nope.
Round here, we cal it porridge if eaten for breakfast. Our local Starbucks has closed down (which is pretty economically scary for Central London), and our Pret cafe does 'breakfast granola', which I've had to ask WTF is that, as no-one locally calls porridge, or indeed anything else, 'granola'.
              :-)
              Sorry.

I love oatmeal, it has to be one of the best breakfast items out there. Only pancakes can eclipse it.

Anyhow, I like my oatmeal thick, so I always make it with the old fashioned/steel cut oats. I make it stove top, with milk, then add even more to it. My usual is peanut butter, cocoa powder and a healthy dose of maple syrup. When all is said and done, its a rich chocolate brown, and so thick, it makes suction noises when you spoon it out. Filling doesn't even begin to describe it. I can go 8 hours w/o food after eating a whole bowl of it.

I encourage all of you try this, it is amazing.

My usual recipe is as follows:

                2 X cups of oats

                2 X cups of milk

                2 x Tbsp Peanut Butter

                1/4 cup cocoa powder

1/4-1/2 cup real maple syrup to taste.

Simple, rich, and I think it could fossilize any beast who would get caught in it.

                Enjoy!

                  Drink it down

Here's how you can drink oatmeal. And Pulease, waffles beat pancakes any day.

You are indeed correct, oatmeal is the term we use here in the States, and the same dish is known as porridge in the UK. We actually had a trivia question about that one day---the company's lame way of pushing new items.

That recipe listed above with the peanut butter....that better fill you up for the whole day! It sounds like a day's worth of calories and fat!

I work for the Canadian hockey coffee and donut place, and we started Oatmeal back last... March? It's weird how we make it since it varies from store to store, and employee to employee. Being that I've worked at 2 locations, there are definately some variance when I make it, and when someone else makes it.

I use half the water and cook it for half the time and it tastes a lot better than when they make it the way the sheet says (It definately looks like gruel and is VERY watery)

To be honest, I never liked "real" oatmeal. I grew up with those little microwave packet ones that had all sorts of flavors. 2 of those with only the amount of milk for 1 packet.

                      I liked REALLY thick oatmeal

I like the flavored packets, especially apple cinnamon and cinnamon raison (I use two packets with boiling water instead of milk, but I like it thick and sticky, while most of my family likes it thinner), but I also don't mind plain if I can add lots of sugar to it. My dad was always trying to make me put one levelled off spoonful per full cereal bowl of oatmeal...not enough! I'd sneak more when he wasn't looking.
It's little things that make the difference between 'enjoyable', 'tolerable', and 'gimme a spoon, I'm digging an escape tunnel'.

I use the packets too, and boiling water - as much as the packets call for. It thickens nicely on standing a bit, quite thick enough for my taste.

I use the quick cook oatmeal--not the minute stuff or the steel cut stuff--and throw frozen fruit in before nuking it. With blackberries and just enough sugar, it tastes like cobbler. *drool*

Apparently it's not just hot cereal, it's an Experience.
Wow! better make the customers sign a waiver, thats some WILD oatmeal!

So I had yet another moron last night.

Three teenagers walk in, one girl, two boys. One of the boys looks at the oatmeal dish display we have.

B1: Hey! Are these free samples?!?
Me:.....Um, no, that's raw oatmeal. I wouldn't eat that if I were you.
                                B1: So...what's it for then?
B2: It's to show you they have oatmeal now, duh!
                                B1: But WHY?

I didn't bother answering him. His friends told him to shut up first LOL.

If I ever go a day without a dumb question RE: oatmeal, I will jump for joy.

In hindsight, I should've shut up and let him eat the raw oatmeal. His teeth didn't look that great anyway.
