I was thinking, why 'rent' some, they were some cheap ones they tried to return. I was like 'why not uhm keep them so your not stuck somewhere you need them?' I have a road side kit in each of my cars which has cables in them. Good little thing to keep

I only refer to the necessity of such things cause one night after closing the shop up and after a quick game of rock/paper/scissors with my CW to see who would make the walk to the main store to do the cash drop for the night. . .I lost lol After making my drop and walking back to the main entrance, just passing right by the hardware dept. A guy walks in, one of those thuggy SC's asking the girl at the counter if they had jumper cables he could borrow.

She tells him that they don't carry any and that the only people that do is the autocenter (us) but that were closed already. Typical Sc response is to start asking questions in hopes of the slim possibility that a resolution will come. So this SC keeps asking things like 'yall dont carry any? Nobody has them? Yall dont have any I can borrow? etc etc" Her polite response is basically 'nope, your SOL with us" In the end he walks away in a huff saying 'Man this is bullsheet"

I hear that look at the girl at the counter and say 'well. . .we do have them on sale this weekend"

This story reminds me of the woman who came to my hotel and decided she didn't want the room, so she checked out. Then she took a SHOWER! It just seems oddly similar though they are such different situations.

You can't return things that you've used without a little charge.

I'm not sure why anyone would RETURN jumper cables. They're pretty useful things to have around, and if they were "rented," then obviously their usefulness has been demonstrated.

I wonder if they do this with flat tires, too?

Of course, when they revert to their old habits, or even if they don't and they have the same problem again but caused by something else, they'll be back at the store getting the cables/snake again!
And they will compain if the ones they get look even a little bit used.

I have a set of jumper cables I inherited many years ago. Prior to that I had a set that I had made back in my cheaper frugal days (the parts were free).

yes, i would have bought a mid range set, though; sometimes, going cheap=asking for problems.
Had a cow-irker (TM Dilbert) who didn't understand that. One Monday, he had a flat battery, and needed a jump start. While providing the jump start, I suggested he get a set of cables, and pointed out what kind he should get (2 gauge 20 foot). The next Monday, he had a flat battery again (got to work a bit before I did, and someone was trying unsuccessfully to give him a jump start). He had a brand new set of yellow booster cables (Canadian Tire yellow cables are 8 gauge, blue are 6 gauge) that weren't long enough to reach - the guy helping him also had a set, and they hooked them up end-to-end, but couldn't get enough power to crank the engine.

I got out my cables, and the engine started on the first crank. I realize the cables I recommended are heavier and longer than most people need, but a Semi takes a fair bit of current to crank the engine, and 20 feet is long enough to reach from the batteries in a Freightliner tractor (between the frame rails, behind the cab) to another vehicle in the aisle in front of the parking spaces (spots on both sides of the dead vehicle were occupied).

Cow-irker saved a couple bucks by getting "car-duty" cables, but if they can't do the job they're a waste of money, and worse than nothing (since you think you're prepared but you aren't).
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

For what it's worth, several years ago I was getting gas at a 7-11. The car in front of me had a dead battery, they tried to get a jump from a couple of people, using cables they bought at said 7-11.

Said cables were garbage. I tried to give them a jump start with their cables, then whipped out my "real" cables. The 7-11 cables gave absolutely nothing, no spark, no power, nothing whatsoever, and close examination revealed that 1 wire wasn't even stripped before it was crimped into the handle. I whipped out my cables and their car started on the first try. I should add that this was over 10 years ago and I STILL have the same jumper cables sitting in my trunk, and they've never failed me yet (though the insulation is pretty brittle now and falls off in chunks).

edit: I've had these jumper cables since 1995 or 1996. They do need replacement sometime in the next year or so since they're now cracking and falling apart. But they're super thick cables that actually pass more than a couple of amps.
