I always got a kick out of hearing people emphatically declare that it was the principal they wanted to sue over, then seeing them back down quickly when the attorney explained that their "principal" suit would require a $5,000 (or more) retainer as, even if there was legal justification for filing suit, the attorney would not take a $200 case on a contingency basis.
Then there was the issue of whether the defendant had the assets to pay whatever the verdict might be even if the verdict included attorney's fees.
I only ever saw one "it's the principal" bluster get backed by the retainer - and then the court ended up awarding only a little over half of the amount the plaintiff wanted. That plaintiff spent several thousand dollars to do the suit, and got about $250. The defendant had a huge (stuff)-eating grin on her face as she wrote out and presented the check for that amount while still in the court room that day.
