Also, there's a difference between cutting down on sugar and cutting out carbs. Fruits and vegetables and whole grains are the carbs you should be eating. White bread versus whole wheat has a very different effect on blood sugar. Same with eating an apple versus an apple pie. The candy bars and stuff are the things you need to avoid. Unless you're diabetic or something like that, I say if you're gonna indulge, have a bit of the real thing...rather than a box of the fake stuff. That said, I admittedly eat too much candy, specifically chocolate. But Hershey semi-recently came out with "Hershey Sticks", that are like 60 calories each...my saving grace since they're like really narrow candy bars and take more than one bite to eat (unlike the kisses that I can practically drink down). And they're really smooth and yummy

Doesn't GNC sell stuff for muscle gain?
As in, stuff packed to the brim with carbs?

Yeah, quite a bit of our stuff is for muscle gain. Muscle gain, weight gain, weight loss.... We have everything but low carb candy bars. We don't have ANY candy. Pills, powders, protein bars, shampoos, soaps, anti wrinkle creams, but no candy

the trick to low-carb is to replace "white" (i.e. processed) carbs with high-fiber, whole grain-type carbs. Instead of white potatoes w/o skin, either eat the potatoes with the skin, or use sweet potatoes. Instead of white rice, use brown & wild rice. Instead of white bread, buy whole grain. Instead of white pasta, buy whole wheat or multigrain. In addition to fruits like bananas and berries, focus more (not INSTEAD of) on fiber-rich fruits like apples, oranges, etc.

That's why I like South Beach better than Atkins. Similar concepts, but oh so different effects on your health.

Friend of mine found out the hard way that she was hypoglycemic when she started Atkins. She nearly died! It's just not safe OR smart.

I started Atkins because I am hypoglycemic, with strong family history of diabeties, and I feel very strongly that it saved my health and quite possibly my life. Ditto for my sister. I cannot tell you how much better I feel and how much more efficiently I am able to process food to keep my blood sugar on an even keel. Atkins was designed for people with sugar issues.

I have no doubt that had I not started this some 5 years ago, I would be diabetic right now.

I'd be interested to know if the person who got sick on Atkins who was hypoglycemic actually educated herself on how to do it properly, ie read the book(s).

I'm hypoglycemic as well, and have a family history of diabetes as well. I won't cut out carbs if my life depended on it. That would mean all the stuff I actually DO eat I couldn't eat since I eat a lot of high carb foods. I am very picky food wise. But anyways I'm going to go over to Vitamin World tomorrow (yes I communicate with competition) and talk to them and see if she went over to them, lol

When they first started the "Low Carb" phase, my dad asked me "What's with all these Low Crab meals everyone is advertising?"

Wow... I have never had anyone demand an adjective... that's pretty low. Usually I find that people understand my requests better if I include a noun.
tee hee! This made me giggle loudly and my co-workers stare at me.

Actually, all the posts with the adjectives - funny!
