Draw it forth from the sun itself and present it to me forthwith!"
... Sun is black and orange...

Did something like that to the girl working the coffee counter the other night, cause it was stuck in my head...
"I'd like a thing, with Thing in it, without Things in it..."
She gave me a look, then moved over to the register to ring it in. And I said, "No, not a Thing you pay for... Sorry, I was 'thing'ing out loud... I'd like a glass of water without ice."
    "Oh!"
    "I call murder on that!"

Yellow cheese? Who knows. Not enough info. What was "the thing" he had in mind? If he had a mind...

I just had something similar to that. Just had a call asking for "the display dept." Arrgggh....

A display is a format. It is not a separate category of advertising. You could run a display ad for anything. Literally anything...cars, real estate, help wanted, retail stores, political ads...you name it. And of course it's worse than pulling teeth trying to get details out of these yahoos so I can transfer them to the correct division.

Margarine (or oleo) is not naturally yellow, it is white, like lard. Ages ago some areas, notably the State of Wisconsin, required that the yellow dye be kept separate. Purchasers had to mix the yellow color into the margarine to make it look like butter. The law was pushed by the dairy industry to make margarine much less appealing than real butter. As far as I know there isn't any such product sold any longer, nor has there been for many years. But this guy doesn't sound like he was old enough to remember undyed margarine.
Ok COLOR is not the reason margarine is not as appealing as butter....it's because it's nasty and butter is good

Brain damage? Sometimes it affects speech and causes the person to pull the wrong word out of memory. Heard of a guy once after a stroke kept begging for "something green." Took his family forever to figure out he meant "something cool." But someone like that would be unlikely to be out alone, wouldn't they?

And you also can't extract the essence of colors from it.

I was purely being silly, my friend.

                      But...

You work at the store, how DARE you not know what Yellow is! That's what all that expensive training at minimum wage (or a little over...) means, you KNOW what the difference between Yellow, YELLOW, and yellow is.

                      Duh.

                      Get with it!

                        Y'know, I just thought....yellow food coloring?

Although why you would mix it with butter...??

We'll probably never know what he wanted.

I get similar customers at the sandwich shop:

"Give me a footlong on wheat"

*customer pauses as if no other information is necessary at the moment*

Ok and what do you want on it for crying out loud, folks usually don't just come in here for a loaf of bread.

The type of bread should be the beginning of the statement, not the end.

Ok, you don't mix it with butter, but surely I'm not the only one that has "They call me Mellow Yellow...." going through my head?

At least I may have been before but now you know you do....

This was my guess too. Apparently it was nationwide - powerful dairy industry is my guess. But this was ages ago because my MIL remebers it from when she was a kid. OP was the guy over 70?
