I know I've gotten behind some people at Wally World whose checks got kicked back because they run there's like a debit card and take the money right out of their bank account and they like to hassle the cashier and call them all kinds of names..

I've had to down right write checks I knew were going to bounce when my husband and I were out of work and had no choice, but it was always for things we needed like food and medicines and this was before I knew about food stamps.

Wow cartons must be cheap overseas.

The average price for cartons around here is about $100.

About 10 or 12 years ago, the price of cigarettes in Ontario nearly doubled in the span of about 18 months. A carton went from $36 to $64. I recall being on a road trip into the U.S., and we stopped at a gas station in Kentucky where they had a special going: Buy 4 packs of Camels or (some other brand, lucky strikes?) get 4 packs free. The regular price was $2/pack. Basicly, you could buy almost an entire carton in Kentucky for the price of a single pack in Ontario.

America has a really powerful tobacco lobby and as a result has way lower taxes on tobacco products than most other developed countries.

From what I understand, kiting a check is illegal just about everywhere.

I've done it a couple of times with my rent check. And have eaten the overdraft fees, which are less than the late rent fees.

The penalties for writing a bad check vary from state to state.. Such as in Alabama it's a misdemeanor where as long as you pick it up before it gets sent to the DA's office or before it goes to court you won't have court cost or be on probation. In Kentucky, it's s felony to write a bad check.
