  • Can i return this?

This lady drove me NUTS. She comes up to the counter and wants to return an item. She had no receipt, which for my store is never a problem since we can just give store credit. Well the item does not scan into the system, this means the product does not belong to our company.

I try telling the customer this but she kept insisting she bought it here. After a couple minutes of arguing, she finally admits she bought it at a competitors.

She then starts to walk away, turns around and says:
"Cant i just return it here, i dont feel like driving all over town".

    I respond:
"M'am, Its like buying something from walmart and trying to return it at bestbuy, we cant do it."

I try and tell her that since the item is not based on our inventory, we cannot return the item. Plus the bar code does not work, so we cant put it into the system anyway.

She then asks for a manager, who thank god agrees with me and tells the lady we cant do anything. She then starts yelling at us about how were supposed to give great customer service and to make her run around town is not good service. She then storms out of the store. Unfortunatly she did not use the famous line "I will never be back here again!"

I thought i had seen it all, but a customer actually admitting they didnt buy the product here and still insisting on a return was something completely new to me lol.

She should have brought it back to my previous place of employment. They took back all kinds of junk, including stuff we didn't even sell.

Not surprisingly, the place ended up going under.

What customer service? If she did not buy it from you then she was never a customer.

          You worked at Staples, too?

Someone once tried to return a CD from Best Buy to the WM where i worked. Their attempt was hindered by the Best Buy tag still attached to the CD. Also her excuse for youreturning to your store was pretty lame.

Something similar happened to me once. A man came in with something, no receipt or anything, and wanted to return it. I didn't recognize the item in question, so I thought that we didn't carry it. He insisted that he had bought it at our store though, so I asked the store manager to come to Customer Service to check it out.

(After all, while I'm familiar with a lot of the things we carry, I don't pretend to know them all, and the item may have been one I just haven't really dealt with yet)

The manager came up to CS and I explained the situation to him, with the customer still insisting that he had gotten the item from us. Well, it turned out that it was indeed an item sold by our company, just not one that was sold at our particular location. As such, we couldn't take it back.

Cue the customer's response: "Oh. Maybe I bought it at (location 20 minutes away) instead."

At least he gave up after that and decided to go to the other location, instead of kicking up a fuss about it, like some people do when they try to return things that our particular store has never carried. Those people can't seem to understand that not all stores in the same chain carry the exact same merchandise (due to size of store or demand of item in that area) and get pissed at us because we can't take it back and have to ask them to return it to the store they got it from.

I actually get people that come up to me with a competitors bag :sigh:, a product with a competitors stickers :double sigh:, and a receipt from the competitor.

If that wasn't all, they STILL try and argue with me that they bought it here.

No, it was a long-ago defunct home improvement store chain that I'm sure most of the people here never even heard of. Their biggest problem, in my opinion, is that they didn't advertise. They had an occasional sales flyer in the Sunday paper, but that's really it. They never advertised on TV or radio.

The same company owns <Brand A>, my clothing store and two other, somewhat similar clothing stores, <Brand B> and <Brand C> (different markets with some customer overlap). We get people trying to make <Brand C> returns all the time. Oddly, we almost never get <Brand B>. The maddening thing is, <Brand C>'s store is literally five doors down from us in the strip mall! It's not hard to find or out of the way at all. Unfortunately, we're not allowed to say, "Go next door, dumbass."

Should've brought it to my former place of employment, the Malmart...

They'll take back anything. They took back an electronic something-or-other (looked like a VCR but with not hole) return from 1997!

Again, I can vouch for this. All in the name of 'customer service' which ends up driving prices higher for customers. Great customer service...

Hechinger's? Builder's Square? I'm in the NorthEast and those are the only two that I'm aware of that went under.
