Hechinger's? Builder's Square? I'm in the NorthEast and those are the only two that I'm aware of that went under.
I just had a flashback to the time that I took out an entire section of doors in Hechinger's... I think I was like 6.

I still don't go down the door aisle anymore in any home improvement store.

I actually get people that come up to me with a competitors bag :sigh:, a product with a competitors stickers :double sigh:, and a receipt from the competitor.

If that wasn't all, they STILL try and argue with me that they bought it here.
Ditto. When I worked at Walgreen's I had a woman who wanted to return a Generic CVS brand of aspirin with the CVS price sticker still on it. She kept insisting that she bought it at our store despite the whole logic fail. She wound up taking me to the drug isle to SHOW ME where she got it. When we could only find generic Walgreen's brand aspirin (go figure) she pulled out the classic, "All of these stores are owned by the same company so you should just take the return!”

Sorry lady, the CVS is literally only two minutes down the road. Take a hike!

No, those two I actually remember seeing advertised on TV. The place I worked at was Channel Home Centers. If you never heard of them, neither did I until I moved into the area, and neither did any of my friends -- even the ones who lived in the area -- until they met me.

I worked at the Harrisburg, PA location. I was only there for six months during 1989, and even then it was obvious the place was in trouble. In addition to the lack of advertising, they failed to stock a lot of basic items that customers were constantly asking for. Then when Hechinger's came into the area, Channel got their ass kicked. Of course, Lowes and Home Depot would later come and kick Hechinger's ass. In fact, there's a Home Depot where Channel used to be. They knocked the building down and put up a much bigger one.

There also used to be a location in York, which is about a half an hour away from Harrisburg, and that one went under before ours did. In fact, a buddy of mine who had a forklift license had to go over there one day and help empty it out. He had an incident over there when one of the other workers told him to bring the forklift into the back room, even though my friend told him he didn't think the forklift with fit thru the door. My friend turned out to be right.

I went in there one day, not too long before the end, and they had started carrying some of the items that the customers had been requesting, but I guess it was a classic case of "too little, too late." One day, I think in the fall of 1991, I was driving down I-83, and I saw a huge sign on the front of the store, advertising a "going out of business sale." Apparently my friend who had the mishap with the forklift saw it too, because when I got home, there was a message on my machine from him that started out, "Hey Mike! Guess what I just saw?" Thankfully, I had quit there about two years prior, so I wasn't out of a job.

Around 1999, I ran into the old store manager from there. He was working at one of the Lowes in the area. I saw him a few times since then, but I stopped going to that one once they built another one closer to where I live, so I'm not sure if he still works there or not.

Before the Hardware store got bar-code scanners, they took back stuff that was obviously not ours. I lost count how many Ace items I found, but my favorite was a box of Wal Mart's Great Value trash bags.

When I found them on the shelves, I took them to Boss#2 (the sister). She actually tracked down the person who returned them and called them and "asked" them to come and get the WAL MART bags and return the money.

And since the customer's dad was a long time customer and friend of the Owner, he did!

I know I posted this, but someone returned (or tried to return) a set of tweezers from J-Mart to my Aid of Rite. FSM (That is, Former SM-SM got herself fired but that's a thread for a different forum) marked it down on clearance and someone bought it anyway.

Should've brought it to my former place of employment, the Malmart...

They'll take back anything. They took back an electronic something-or-other (looked like a VCR but with not hole) return from 1997!
I can also attest to this, I was (briefly) a cake decorator for them and we had a lady bring back a huge half eaten sheet cake from a different grocery store, Publix. It was in the Publix box, and had the receipt from Publix still taped to it, and customer service let them return it. To Malmart. Awesome.

I had a SC demand I refund them something that clearly had a competitors logo in it. He had the receipt, which indicate it was purchased at the store DIRECTLY ACROSS THE STREET.

By the time they were done arguing with myself and a manager, they could have walked across the street and returned it.
