  • Skipped out on the bill and scooter woes

Ugh, where do I begin with this guest? It started about four days ago. I got a phone call asking for a room for this SC. She needed smoking, downstairs, with a fridge and microwave. I had one left. Great! We'd hold it for her no problem.

SC arrived. She wass old, frail, and in a motorized scooter. Note: downstairs does NOT equal wheelchair/scooter accessible! There's a little step to get into the room. It's a very small step (like, two inches), but it's enough to cause someone on wheels difficulty.

Despite this, SC decided to take the room. Other MOD had to help her get her scooter into the room, though. SC kept calling and needing help with the remote, her luggage, etc. Other MOD obliged. It was annoying, but not sucky...yet.

SC paid for two nights upfront. On checkout day, she insisted that her church was going to pay for more nights. Other MOD waited...and waited....and waited....finally, about five hours after check-out, Other MOD asked for the church's number. Their office was closed. So that's 1 night SC did not pay. Being so old and frail, it didn't seem ethical to kick her out on the street.

So yesterday, we called the church. They said that they hadn't talked to SC in over six months, and they were not paying anything. They didn't have the resources. We informed SC of this. She said she'd call them. She called me a few minutes later to look up another number for a different charity. I gave her the number.

A few minutes more passed. It was 3 hours past check-out now...27 hours past what she was paid up for. SC called 911. The police came, and they gave her a ride her to the hospital. Though the police packed up a bunch of ther things, Housekeeping reported a bunch of stuff still left in the room. I told them to leave it. We didn't know if SC would be coming back, and at that point I had to run to class. So, though SC was gone, her stuff was in the room, so that's a second night unpaid for.

This morning, I got a better look in the room. There's two, maybe three suitcases worth of things, which isn't bad, but there is also...the scooter. I do not have a storage room big enough to stow that thing. If I leave it out in the rain, it will be ruined. I can stow it briefly in our boiler room, but we really need to keep that area as clear as possible for safety reasons.

I called the hospital. The switchboard operator couldn't find SC listed. She transferred me to a social worker, who I left a voicemail with, but something tells me SC wasn't even admitted. So I'm left with this scooter with absolutely no place to put it. So we're out two night's room revenue with this SC, and the hassle of this scooter.

We are supposed to store lost and found for 30 days, but I think that's just company policy and not a legal obligation. If that is the case, then I know a charity that would LOVE this scooter, and could pick it up right away. I think I'll look up the relevant laws right now, and if my hunch is correct, that charity can probably have this scooter gone by the end of the day...I hope I'm right, 'cause the sooner I get rid of this, the better!

EDIT: I found a name and address on a tag on SC's luggage that didn't belong to SC. I was so excited! I found the phone number for the guy, but it was disconnected. Then I did a search on his name and discovered he died in December. So...SC apparently had some dead guy's luggage, and I've hit another dead end in trying to track her down.

Why don't you keep it for yourself? Those things are a blast to drive around

The dead guy might be her (former) husband. Would her church maybe know about some family?
Since the scooter is worth more than two days, even two weeks, I doubt she has skipped for good.
The policemen who took her to the hospital may know what became of her.

The dead guy wasn't her husband. He had a wife. I could only find her name, though, and no updated contact info. I don't know if she's still at that house or what. The church didn't have any contact info on her. The police just dropped her off at the hospital...they don't know what happened to her beyond that.

Dead guy's house is on the way to the bank. So I think I may drive by and see if dead guy's wife is still there. Perhaps she knows something. Though I'd feel really awkward just showing up like that.

Boss Man's Boss will probably say we have to keep the scooter the full 30 days. I emailed him and asked if we could get rid of it sooner. The sooner I get rid of it, the better. At this point IDC if SC misses it or not. If I had it my way, it would be gone today. I don't have it my way, though, but I'm still working on getting it my way!

You might want to contact the local police about it. Let them do the babysitting of the property, if you have to keep it, though that would make it harder to force her to pay up. Of course, there is the slight chance that the scooter is actually stolen.

Those things have a serial number on them. I suspect that, as a medical device, there may be a record of who it was originally dispensed to. It might take a few phone calls, but you ought to be able to track it down at least as far as the vendor. They might not want to tell you who owns it, citing HIPAA, but at least they might be able to get in touch with the owner.

Especially if the thing's rented and not sold outright.

Good idea Shalom. I'll see if I can do that tomorrow.

You never know, some of that stuff that was left behind may belong to the dead guy's wife. I would stop and say that some items were left behind at the hotel and when you were looking for a way to identify the owner you found her husband's name. She may have given the items to someone she knows and you can find the person who skipped out on their bill.

This is actually what I was thinking. It's one thing to hold someone's jacket for 30 days, quite another to hold an expensive piece of medical equipment that you have no room for and no secure way of storing. Perhaps you should ask Boss Man's Boss if the hotel's insurance will cover this in the case they are accused of it being damaged or stolen? That may prompt handing things over to the police.

And here's a question. Why did the police show up instead of an ambulance? I'm guess 911 wasn't called as a medical emergency?

Here's another thought. Check the obituaries. If she wasn't admitted, and didn't come back, maybe it's because she died.

Assuming she had any family to place one. Worth a try, though.

It's possible the wife of the dead guy gave some stuff away to a charity, and the lady bought it. LIke at goodwill or something. *shrugs* Just a thought that occurred to me.

As the owner of a medical scooter myself; I recommend giving it to the police to hold, and giving them the whole story as well.

I believe that in many jurisdictions, whoever turned a lost&found item in can have a claim on it after the police hold duration expires, so yeah, you have a fair chance of getting it yourself anyway.

But I would be SOOOO LOST without my scooter! I can't drive safely, but I can scooter safely and can travel with it anywhere within its range, or within the range of our train network. It's my legs, and my freedom.

Please, please, either store it for the 30 days, or give it to the police to hold and keep a record that you've done that. A medical scooter can be vital to a person's quality of life. Absolutely vital.

                            2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
                            3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.

Agree with Seshat, let the police store the scooter and her stuff but let them know that she owes you money and must take care of that bill before it's handed over.

And agreed, if not claimed in 30 days claim in and donate it to a charity and take the tax deduction!
