  • They're really making an effort now.

I work at a gas station. Five minutes after I got on my register tonight I activated a pump car. Said, "Hello pump 11, we'll see you inside to pay when you're done."

I heard the sound the register makes when someone hooks their nozzle back up after pumping and looked up at pump 11. He pumped $46.60 worth of gas. Red car, guy in a baseball cap. He gets back in his car and I stare at him. Anytime someone gets back in the driver's seat after pumping I watch them like a hawk. Sometimes people think their credit card worked when it didn't or they just forget to pay, or... whatever. Those people will come in when you step outside and wave them down.

This guy saw me watching him and got back out of his car and started coming in. Then I had to ring up a customer so I looked away. 30 seconds later I look at the yard again and the car is gone! WHAT! I scan the parked cars but none of them are red. Ugh, a drive-off. Worse, he had faked me out. I knew without even hearing the next part of this story that it was intentional theft.

One of the girls was taking trash out and saw the guy turn around and go back into his car. He waited until her back was turned and then drove away. She said he went into the parking lot of the Wal-Mart next door (the parking lots are sort of connected). And HE HAD TAKEN OFF HIS PLATE.

That's twice in one day people have gone to the Wal-Mart parking lot, taken off their plates, stolen gas from my store, then left through the Wal-Mart lot. I made people prepay the rest of the night I was so pissed off.

I really hate people. I better not get written up for this, there was nothing I could do to prevent it other than endanger my own life. There's nothing you can do to stop a really determined thief.

Sounds like your store may have to go pay ahead to get the pumps turned on. Too bad you can't switch them off as soon as you see a plate-less car.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

How is it that your gas pumps can activate without having to slide a credit or debit card first? That would stop drive-offs.

These people obviously think they are clever. I hope you are able to install a security system or find a better way to stop this.

We manually authorize them. The register beeps when someone lifts the nozzle. I always look at the car when I authorize. The drive-offs don't happen until the gas is pumped, obviously, so there's rarely a reason not to turn on the pump for them.

We have cameras on the pumps but they aren't detailed enough to show plate numbers.

And the people who take their plates off are careful to park with the nose of the car toward the store. I wouldn't turn on a pump if the car didn't have a plate.

The gas station I frequent makes you wait until the pump is activated inside. Not a bad idea really as for them its prevented situations like this for the most part. Of course they have gotten scammers every so often but nowhere near as bad as it used to be for them.

If they couldn't get away with just taking the plates off, they'd steal other peoples licence plates. That's what they do here, where most gas stations have cameras which can show numbers.

It's just going to have to go to pre-pay only. Either go inside and pay for however much you want to pump, or run a card and get pre-authorised for up to however-many-dollars.

Then the cashier repays any change (for cash), or the card is only debitted for however much is pumped & the pre-authorisation is cleared.

Failing that, a system that grabs your fingerprints and DNA when you pick up the pump handle, and refuses to run the pump if it doesn't recognise you.

                3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
                4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

I fear that this option will mean even higher gas prices .

All of the gas stations here are prepay now. I don't mind it because I always pay at the pump anyway.

About 6 months ago we maybe a half a dozen stations in my area that didn't require pre-pay or pay at the pump. Now I think all but one is pre-pay. It never bothered me to have to pre-pay.

The only people to complain are most likely the scamers anyway.

THey are really trying, I had a lady pump 30.00 even and usually when it's even I don't think about it because why would you make it even if you were just gonna leave, you know? She left. Figures. Whatever though, as long as they hang up the DAMN PUMP so I don't have to go out there and hang it up. Next time someone comes up without a plate I'm shutting off the pump and putting a key to their car. Next thing I say is "You're going to go in and pay and next time you come here you're going to have a plate on your car or I'll carve some numbers here for you."

Almost did it to one kid but just stopped the pump at 5 bucks and told the rest of my people not to turn it on again if he tried to get more. He left and we were only out 5 bucks. Haha, he was driving a Ford F150 too. What a loser. Probably just enough to get him across the street.

Add my C-store to one where gas theives are striking. I walked into work the other morning and got told by my manager that someone had deliberately driven off with $70 in gas the day before. It was noon, and they hooked the nozzle on the one beside it, instead of hanging it back up, then drove off. I agree that pre-pay is the only way to stop it from happening. Yeah, people might throw fits about it at first, but they'll calm down eventually. As for us clerks? We'd bow down and kiss the feet of whoever made the decision to make it all pre-pay only!
