"You gave me the wrong change and How dare you drop my credit card!"
I've looked back at the order history of some of my exceptionally sucky customers and sure enough, there's usually an order from them from within the last few days. Liars!!
"I was only LOOKING, I didn't mean to enter my card's CVV and actually ORDER! REFUND ME RIGHT NOW!!"
SC: Excuse me, but you short changed me.
ANM: Hmm let me see...'counts change' No this looks right.
SC: It is not!
ANM: How so?
SC: I gave you a twenty!
ANM: No you didn't.
SC: Yes I did!
ANM: 'Asks me' ExArtShopSlave, did you see me take a twenty?
Me: No, I saw you take a ten.

I don't know exactly about this situation or how the counter space was set up, but I'm always in the habit that when I'm handed a bill, I always lay it as far out of reach of the customer as I can but still perfectly visible, and in this situation, verbally say "Out of Ten" to the customer (hopefully they are actually paying attention). I always count back their change (I place any coinage in their hand but always lay the bills spread out on the counter as I count it back so they can visibly see it) and then I snag up the bill(s) they gave me so it's totally out of their reach and lay it on top of the keyboard or on top of the open drawer without putting it away in the drawer. This way if the customer says (in this example), "No I gave you Twenty", I can simply show them the bill and say "No, THIS is what you gave me". Only after they leave do I put the bills away.
Fortunately ever since I've done it this way, I've never had anyone try to scam me.
