Every southern state has a coastline. Tell your friend that little nugget...lol.
Of the states in the Confederacy... Arkansas & Tennessee would like a word...

Missouri, Kentucky, New Mexico Territory (including Arizona), Indian Territory and Utah Territory were also non-coastal slave-holding areas.

I have found that temperature doesn't make any sense when it bothers me. In the middle of summer, I'd probably put on a coat if it were 60 out. In the middle of the winter, well, I'd probably still put on a jacket, but I'd "Feel" warmer.
That's totally normal, and it's for the same reason that people from different places regard different temps as hot and cold, it all has to do with what your body is used to. That's why (around here) in the spring everyone is dressed in shorts and a t-shirt when it hits 65, and in the fall it's long pants and a light sweater at 65.

Heh. My mom has always been a freezy-cat type. Always cold. Parents moved to Florida (from Ohio) 14 years ago, she now gripes when it goes down 'in the 30s' at night, and guilted my dad into buying one of those fireplace inserts.

My dad has always been warmer blooded like me, but I guess he's finally becoming a Floridian, because when I was down there at Christmas and it got down to 30, he turned on the fireplace of his own accord and was sitting near it, claiming it was cold. I was oddly disappointed by this, because he was always my hot-blooded ally and would join me in poking fun at mom for being a freezy cat.

Oh, I know. My mom grew up in Miami, she was always threatening to move back to Florida the moment us kids graduated High School. She followed through.
In my case, I lived in Chicago for nearly a decade and got adjusted to it (I'm from South Georgia where we got a mild dusting of snow every twenty years). You learn how to layer your clothes REAL quick up there.

What I didn't adjust to is people doing a crappy job of keeping their sidewalks clean. My bad knees were in enough pain from the temperature drop, they didn't need gravity and a sudden stop to make things worse.

Just to chime in, I am from Melbourne Australia, which is one of the colder parts down on the South East Coast. We are known for having Four Seasons in one day, there's even a song about it!

You quickly learn the art of layering here!

We've been experiencing a cooler than usual summer, which is fine by me! I don't handle muggy heat well, dry heat is ok if I don't have to work in it! LOL!

Ten years ago I moved to England (was there 2 1/2yrs), much more my kind of weather! My dad is from Belfast so I joke that the British side of my DNA is what makes me unAustralian when people are asking where summer is, and I tell them I hope it never comes!

I once spent 4 months at a summer camp on Lake St Catherine in Vermont. We arrived at the end of May, where not 2 weeks before there had been snow on the ground. I had to buy myself a jumper (sweatshirt) for the night time, but during the day, myself and one of the girls from Nova Scotia would swim our little hearts out, even though the water was freezing! Same as when I did my life saving course a couple hours outside of NYC the week beforehand. Freezing water but I loved it!

Here in Melbourne it's not odd for the temp to stay over 20C overnight in the summer, even as high as 28-30+ when we are on a hot streak. The days can get well over 40C. In the winter we will have some snow in the mountain ranges, and it might get to -2/-4 overnight, but down in the suburbs the coldest I can remember is 2C overnight. During the day it rarely stays below 10C in winter, probably hangs around 14C when on a cold streak!

I may bitch about the heat, but I do love summer! Daylight savings, and warm breezy summer nights! Can't beat it!

BeenThereDoneThat I was once getting off a coach in Amsterdam and was making small conversation with some American girls, they asked where I was from and when I replied "Melbourne" they both looked at me strange as I obviously didn't sound American. I realised why they were looking at me funny and pointed out, "Melbourne Australia!"

We all had a little giggle after that.

I have heard of it, but I know nothing about it except that it's in Florida. How's the weather?

LOL, that's funny. :-) Our city is not exactly unknown but it's not famous or anything. One thing I remember from way back before I moved here from New Jersey was Olivia Newton-John doing commercials for Melbourne AUS tourism and explaining it's pronounced "MEL-burn", not "mel-BORN". It still irks me when people from around here pronounce it wrong!!

The weather for most of the year, say April through October, is hot and humid with frequent thunderstorms/downpours. When I moved here in 1990 you could almost set your watch by the afternoon storms, but weather patterns have obviously changed. We are near the Atlantic Ocean (about halfway down the peninsula, between Jacksonville and Miami) so we have a sea breeze... the typical high temp for those 6 months or so is about 91F/33C, and the overnight lows have crept up...used to be in the low 70sF/22ishC but sometimes now they are in the mid to high 70s, which combined with the humidity is really nasty. We have our central air conditioner running constantly during that time.

Cooler and drier weather sets in around November and sticks around till March or April, though the temps are higher after February. Daytime highs can vary greatly, but are generally in the upper 60s/low 70s F. Sometimes they'll only go as high as the 50s and at least one day this year or late 2011 I don't think it made it past 49 . At night, I'd say typical is the 50s, but sometimes a cold front will come in and we can get down into the 30s and occasionally even down to freezing (32F) or even below. Extended temps below freezing are really bad for local plant life including tropical crops. This winter has been mild so far, thank goodness. Right now at 3:15 PM Thursday it is 79F, so it's pretty warm out, and mostly sunny.

LOL yeah good old Mel-burn, it's actually more like Mel-bun, but that's just because we are slack in pronouncing our R's! Oh and Brisbane is Bris-bun not Bris-bane (like vain).

The weather actually sounds better than I'd expect for Florida! I've always been interested in going there, but never thought I would because I can't stand humidity! I sweat just thinking about the heat, and that's what I hate most, muggy sweaty weather! So maybe I should come during your winter! Would be off peak so not as expensive, and I'd have a shot at not dying of dehydration!!

Yes, winter is a good time to come except maybe at holiday time since we do get crowds then. The "snowbirds" (northerners who winter in Florida) are here then too but they don't necessarily do the touristy things, plus they tend to be seniors so no kids around. I'd say late winter might be a good time...that also puts you before Spring Break (though I guess the beach towns are worse at that time than the Orlando area).

ETA: I doubt this would be confusing really but just to confirm our winter is December through March so that is your summer...lol

                          LOL yes I know that!

My brother and his wife were just in Orlando for a few days, they were going on a cruise that departs from there as part of a round the world trip, (their trip is around the word, not the cruise!). She is a school teacher, this was her big summer break, the only time they could do it. They said it was freezing on their cruise, (they were going to the Bahama's) and it was good they were packed for the UK or they would have been stuffed!

Cool...I bet they sailed out of Port Canaveral which is a great place. I hope they have fun, and I'm glad they packed the right clothes Even here, that wind can get bone chilling in winter...especially on the open ocean.

FTR, if you talk to anyone in the Northern Virginia area, all of them will Virginia is a "northern state" and don't you dare compare them to "those southerners". But generally these are the same people who want Northern Virginia to break away an make their own state.

Ever since I got pregnant back in 2003, I have been like a personal space heater. When I was pregnant with Clementine, it was during the winter months, and I was wearing capri pants and t-shirts because I was roasting. Even now, I'll go out in my capri pants or gauchos and a 3/4-sleeve or shorter sleeved shirt. People look at me strangely, but oh well.
And you're welcome (in regards to my avatar).

I'm the space heater in my family/have the thickest blood/best tolerance for cold.

One winter in my early teens, it was -10c outside before the wind, not sure what it would be after the windchill, wouldn't be less then -20. I had all the windows and doors open in the house, I had moved a chair so I was sitting right in the wind tunnel effect in the house. A friend was over visiting, he was wearing a parka, heavy duty gloves, heavy sweaters, thermals, normal socks and two pairs of wool socks (feet tucked under him on the couch), etc. And was shivering his off.

Dad was wearing a sweater jacket over another sweater.

                                Mom was wearing a sweater.

Brother wasn't home at the time.

Me - wearing a pair of summer shorts, a thin tshirt that if the light hits it right I may as well not be wearing it, and nothing else.
                                And I was perfectly comfortable.

Everyone else were in spots where the wind was very light, if at all.

There have been multiple times where it will be the middle of winter, and I'd be outside in the snow with barefeet.

When summer comes however.... The temp gets above 20c and I start looking for a freezer to hide in while waiting for winter.
