In the old Commander Keen computer games if you took to long to move the charater, he would sit down and read a book.
Alucard did that in Symphony of the Night!

(BTW, for fans of that, I totally have a black label copy of it that my husband got me for a birthday present!)

A "long idle" animation of some sort has been quite common since the 1990s
IIRC - Sonic the Hedgehog did that in the 2-d games. Some of the animations were -- tapping his foot and giving the player the evil eye, checking his "watch" impatiently, and lying down with his head propped up, occasionally opening one eye to look at the player.

I thought he only sat down to read if you were standing in front of a chair at the time (press up in that situation and he'll sit down on the chair). Love that game ^_^ You can also get him to interact with confessionals/prayer stations...tho you might not want to. Muhahaha.

World of Warcraft had some cute pet animations, as did Everquest 1.

ROFL ^_^ I'm honestly not 100% sure So, no worries.

The /sit or /heal thing works in Final Fantasy XI, as well (it's actually the main way to regen; only certain classes get automatic healing)....complete with the "blood aggro" penalty (read: monsters within range will assume you are critically low on HP and will attack you even if you're so much stronger that they can't even HIT you ).

FFXI aggro was kinda weird, anyway >_> It had the usual standard aggro and linking, etc...Sight: they see you; Sound: they hear you -- and yes, standing still would prevent this unless the monster was already aware of your presence...But they also have Magic (You cast a spell nearby), Blood (low HP%), and Scent: Some mob types can *track* you over a fairly large distance if their path crosses a place you have been, even if they never saw/heard you, until you either leave the zone or walk through some water. Reasonably enough, the usual ones that could do this were generally either predatory animals (big cats) and monsters with big noses, like goblins.

Everquest 1 had that too. I have to laugh now because I can go into the Desert of Ro now and the orcs will avoid me, until I sit. Then an Orc Pawn will decide he can take me, even though while sitting he can't hit me hard enough to overcome my innate regen.

LOL, I totally forgot about GUComics ... I just wasted half an hour flipping through them

What is the comic about the really horrible dwarven hunter? Anybody? Is it still being drawn?

The demanding customer with the low budget had ME laughing, and I am not a gamer, and haven't "programmed" anything since grade school (late 70's/early 80's) when we learned how to do some stuff with BASIC. I know less about programming and coding than most of you know about doing professional-level magic tricks. Hell, I know less about programming and coding than Lindsay Lohan knows about responsibility and sobriety!

I had to show my gamer/computer nerd roommate the OP, and he had quite a few chuckles from it.

Look, I know less than nothing about programming, but I DO know that asking someone to create a custom program for you is going to be neither cheap nor easy for them. For the voiceover work alone, the only part of this I have any experience with, I would almost certainly charge a MINIMUM of $200, unless it was real basic stuff. "Hi. I'm Jester. Welcome to Crap Adventure 1. At the tone, please state your name and then wait for your head to explode."

The way I relate to this is very simple. It's the people who not only balk at my rates for doing private parties, but question them. "Why is it so much? All you're gonna be doing is some card tricks for kids. How tough can that be?" Great. Once you've invested several years of your life to learning not only how to do the mechanics of the tricks, but have also mastered the best way to present them to a crowd of unruly children and not only keep their gnat-sized attention for a straight half hour, but make them scream with glee and laughter, you let me know how simple it is. Until then, tell you what: if you can find someone who can do what I do at the level I do it at for less than what I charge, HIRE THEM. Oh, and good luck on that last part.

Or like the people who come into my bar and are staggered by the prices.

                  "Yeah."
Does that look like Omaha to you?
No? Of course not. Because you're not in Omaha. You're in Key West, [slipping into Jeremy Clarkson voice] one of the most popular tourist destinations...in the world.

Back to the OP, when the, uh, prospective client offered to double his budget, I thought of Cyrano Jones: "Twice nothing is still nothing." (What he said when The Bartender doubled his offer to 2 credits per tribble.)

once i was bored and decided to work on defense. so i aggro'ed a will-o-wisp and let it beat up on me. it would run away scared but then wander back when i was sitting to attack. until i decided to stop toying with it and kill it.

actually i did that to a friend in a duel once too. i'd knock him unconscious repeatedly until he said "just kill me!"

now for my current favorite RPG - text only mud ftw! - sitting doesn't change hp / sp regen afaik, but we do still sit and lie down just cos we can. sleeping however... that brings it back fast - or eating, getting drunk etc, or heals. but to sleep you have to lie down of course.

In my current RPG (Amalur) You don't get auto health regen unless you have specific objects to get it.

Therefore I assumed Captain Trips reply when I had Health regen potions as the description says "increases your health regen a bit". I assumed therefore that not having health regen they wouldn't work. Confused me when they did!
