"Wtf do you mean I have to pay for it?! It's not real work, you're just drawing!"
Yes, and the works of Picasso, da Vinci, Monet, Michelangelo and van Gogh are just paint splashed around....

Exactly! These folks just Do Not Get It. They think Seraph is just tapping a bunch of buttons and voila! Instant web page! There's a lot more to it than that; it takes into account Seraph's education, her knowledge of code, how to make links work properly, artistic knowledge and ability, knowing what looks good and what does not, the list goes on. That's a lot of brain work; it's no different than paying a lawyer big bucks because he's educated in and understands the legal system. The same could be said for any profession, really, and IIRC we had a thread along those lines here recently.

EDIT: yes, found the post: http://www.customerssuck.com/board/s...ad.php?t=85106

        Not to mention Jackson Pollock.

People don't get the fact that quality costs money. A few examples from the trucking industry:

You can get a pure sine wave inverter/charger for around $1500. A "modified sine wave" (actually a modified square wave) inverter with the same wattage rating is around $150 at any truck stop. The PSW I/C has a few features, namely you can plug your devices into it, and they'll get 120V "pass-through" from shore power or your APU when it's running, or 120V from the inverter when you don't have shore power or your APU is off. If your APU cycles on and off (for heating/cooling), your devices still get constant 120V. The MSW inverter also has a few "features", namely the "noisy" waveform throws interference onto your CB, requiring that you turn up the squelch, and risks damaging your laptop and your flat-panel TV.

To hook up the inverter, you can get a $100 wiring kit, or a $25 wiring kit. The $100 kit comes with a fuse in the supply line, so if the wiring shorts due to the insulation rubbing through, the fuse will blow. The $25 kit doesn't have a fuse, so if the wiring shorts you'll burn a $150,000 truck to the ground.

You can buy galvanized cushion clamps for around $1 each, or you can get a place that does custom sheet metal work to make them from stainless for around $3 each (in quantity). The stainless ones will NEVER rust out. The galvanized ones will (a matter of "when", not "if"), and drop a heater hose onto a bolt head where it chafes through. If you spent the extra money to spec a truck with a coolant level sensor, it'll trip and you'll get the warning light that means "pull onto the shoulder NOW - the engine will be shut off in 10 seconds", and you need to wait (and pay) for an emergency road service call to get the problem repaired. If you didn't spec (and pay for) the coolant level sensor, you'll find out when you've dumped enough coolant that the engine overheats (remember, the temperature sensor reads COOLANT temperature, not BLOCK temperature, so if it's dry you won't get a warning) and seizes up - the $2 you saved on the clamp can go toward a $30,000 rebuild job on your engine.
Any fool can piss on the floor. It takes a talented SC to shit on the ceiling.

I switched my cabin around so everything in it uses 12 DC only (yes that includes the power tools).

But my biggest problem with the modified sine inverters is that people REFUSE to learn what that means and then complain that their system does not work but it always worked for their friend.

Somehow they completely ignore the fact that they don't know the model number of the inverter their friend uses and only the brand name. They insist that is the same model as their own, but they don't even know their own model number either!

Worse they claim my inverter works fine then don't want to believe me when I point out I removed my inverter hookups and now my entire cabin run on 12 VDC only. The inverter in the corner of the room is only if something odd shows up. They then insist I am wrong! I wired up my cabin, I bought all the 12V lights, radio, TV, power tools and yet they still want to tell my how my cabin is setup!

What is wrong with these people?

I'm pretty good friends with my tattooer now, and when I was unemployed, I'd often go there to hang out, and often ended up helping out with this and that. One day, a guy comes in, asking how much a name tattoo would cost, "about this size" (shows arm). He gets the reply, "about 2000-2200 krona". He gets butthurt, and quips out "wut? this one just cost me 800!", then leaves. "I can totally believe it only cost 800." was what I told my tattooer when the guy left. Quality wasn't that good, to say the least. You get what you pay for. Took me two bad tattoos to learn that lesson.

*curious* *googles* 2200 krona = 330 Canadian. I paid 150 for my tat, and I assume what he wanted was bigger... sounds right to me.

or in navy terms... a regular old household power strip goes anywhere from 10 - 40 or so depending on how much protection you want. (perhaps more for some fancy dancy stuff)

BUT if you want something that's qualified for use on board a Navy ship it'll cost you 60. cos it's specifically designed to handle the fact that shipboard AC runs both both sides hot. (meaning, positive and negative sides are carrying live current, just in opposite phase with the other side).

You can have quality or you can have it cheap. You can't have both. If you want quality, go to Seraph. If you want cheap, go somewhere else. Pure and simple.

I have often said to people inquiring about a private magic show that if they can find someone of my abilities or better for less money, to hire that magician. Considering the fact that I am pretty good at what I do, and that my prices are pretty reasonable, and that every magician around here that would be at my level or better charges FAR MORE, I am not all that worried.

Brings to mind this woman who called a few years ago and wanted me to do a party for her in Marathon, which is an hour's drive from Key West, each way. I told her my fee, at which she balked, and asked if I wouldn't do it for her for a THIRD of my normal fee.

Um, no. I wouldn't do that for someone if they were NEXT DOOR to me, let alone involving a two hour total commute. Especially since to do that particular show, I would have had to give up my bar shift that day and miss out on that money as well. So, yeah....not happening. I will not allow someone to tell me what I should charge them for my services. These are my prices. If I like you or it's a charity I believe in, I MAY choose to offer a bit of a discount. But a third of my normal fee, PLUS uncompensated travel? That woman was out of her freakin' mind.

As was the person dealing with Seraph.

Quite simply; I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for. And as long as you have clients who ARE willing to pay what you charge, ignore the idjits. Respond, then don't give them the time of day.

I follow the YGWYPF philosophy with a lot of stuff. If I know something will last if I buy the best or close to it, I will. But if its something I may not really use a lot, and the less pricy version will do, I'll do that. I absolutely hate when people nickle and dime like that.

Reminds me of the old joke about the guy who charged $1,000.05 to put a chalk mark on a machine and to tell people to hit it there to get it to work. When asked why so much he responded "the 5 cents is for the chalk, the thousand is for knowing where to put the mark."

Well said. You get what you pay for. Whether you want top quality and top price, or low quality and low price, or a balance of the two depends on the person and the item being bought - but knowing the truth in the statement and making an informed decision is the key.

Or in other words, some things you buy at the dollar store, other things you get at a specialty shop - the important part is being able to know which is which for your own life and purposes.

                                Madness takes it's toll....
