Recovering Kinkoid, I too am in the SCA (Garb is most definitely clothes), but not for so long, started when twelve so it'll be about ten years this year (I'm a young one).

I read comic books and am working on a webcomic. I did a stint in manga and am trying to recover, but I still love a lot of the series'. Too bad so many fell into soap opera mode and would just not ever end. All good things must come to an end or they become mediocre.

I do not play video games (was too poor and just never got into them) but I will play computer games and adore quite a few (*Diablo, Baldur's Gate) but again am too poor for the massive online multi-player ones.

I play D&D and TROS (The Riddle of Steel--it's a good one, highly recommend) and regularly roleplay online in simple IMs and chat (as in every day, different games, same time). Some of these have turned into epics. Remember the webcomic mentioned before? Yeah, that's what it'll be from.

I draw and read one an extremely regular basis.

I photoshoot in my garb and other costumes for stock photos on deviantart (where my art is also posted--the webcomic is not up yet, far from ready).

Some of you know that I frequent a model car message board. Most of members are male...however, there are a few ladies on the boards now. They can build things with the best of us over there. And yes, they get "mad props" from the rest of us

On the geek chick bandwagon here. I game (video, Magic, board, D&D, World of Darkness; I'll try anything at least once), cosplay, go to Ren Faires, like sci-fi and fantasy, do comic books and anime. And I had three of the geekiest conversations at the company meeting today. I'm the only female in my department and half my co-workers lament my marital status.

I do get some people looking over me for my male co-workers and I just let it roll off me. I hate dealing with customers or trying to convince people to buy our services. I'd much rather ignore everybody and poke at computers all day. So if they don't want to talk to me because I'm a girl, then that's just fine with me.

But for every chauvinist I encounter, I get some pretty decent customers. A lot of middle-aged and older females like talking to me because they get intimidated by my male co-workers and they think I'll break it down for them. And some of the younger guys will try to flirt with me, which is pretty flattering.

THEY DONT NOTICE THE GIRLS RIGHT NEXT TO THEM!!
Oh, the nerdy guys notice girls, alright. But until they can roll a d20 against charisma to calculate the chances of getting a date in real life, they wouldn't know what the hell to do.

I am a girl who plays video games, collects comic books LARPs and roleplays. Guys either worship me as their Goddess or think I'm weird! *shrugs*

we used to have a Computer Cafe in my town, it was really popular, as they installed alot of popular games, and people hung out there...

most the EverQuest players, were girls, some of the best Counter Strike players, were girls.

LIVE/LARP events, usually seem to have girls, atleast that's what my sister who used to LIVE/LARP say, she also made her own costumes, wich they would wear in public to get in free at concerts with Blackmore's Night.

girls are geeks too, and it's not that rare really, only with sad lonley guys that still if afraid of cooties.

I measure a geekchick's geekiness by her willingness to ride the Atlanta subway and tour the High Museum of Art with me while decked out in her full Renaissance finest, when we just have to take a break from the festivities at DragonCon.
I have no doubt the HMA would not bat an eye.
With the advent of DCon in the past couple of decades, I have to admit that most city people have become nice and jaded to just about everything...

There's waaaay more geekchicks out there than anyone realizes.
Everyone who uses the Telstra digital exchanges uses some of my software.

I've been published by O'Reilly (a major geek-tech publisher) - as have a surprising number of women.

I know female kernel writers, security experts, system administration gurus, programming teachers, and .. well, just about every part of the geek-tech world has women in it.

                  ....

so why do we STILL get given attitude?

And why is it that when I was the one being chatted up, and I finally got sick of it and said 'Get out! We're trying to work in here!', I was the one who was accused of being harassing?

                  .................................................. ......

Oh, and on the 'roll call' side of the thread: computers, fantasy books (and some sci-fi) (and can tell the difference), some comics, lots of roleplay, and those of you who attended the FilkCon in Atlanta which had Mike Whitaker & Phoenix (from the UK) have met me. I was the Aussie who told the Aboriginal story at the Sunday morning gathering.

                  2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
                  3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.

                    Let's see, I:

--own a stupid amount of gaming/SF/fantasy/computer books
--have built two computers and am working on a third
--have a huge number of anime figurines on my desk along with science toys, bugs in lucite, old CPUs, Perplex City cards and a roll of tamper-proof evidence tape (what I could use it for, I have no idea, but I got it free when I ordered my boots from Galls)
--the vast majority of my music collection is anime/TV/game soundtracks and/or artists that probably four people besides me have ever heard of

I used to help run/be involved in a Ghostbusters LARP a number of years ago; that's now all online/chat-based RP'ing. Half the players are elsewhere, and I don't think Boston's finest would be too happy about us running around downtown with our props (circa 1997 we could get away with it, but probably not now). I am trying to rebuild my proton pack replica though (first one was carelessly thrown into the storage unit and got crunched; luckily I hadn't used the top-notch parts I am now).

As for fanboys noticing fangirls, I have a classic.

When we ran Allout Helter (LARP) the players had to wear yellow badges, usually on a clip on their fronts. Front of the badge had our logo and their player number. Back had the logo of their team, their character name, and their stats. There were six common team logos and around three uncommon ones.

On the Sunday of the Con, after the game wrapped up, the players would frequently run around looking at each other's badges and player sheets to see the differerent artwork and different stories each team had. (Each team had unique stuff, so it was fun to look at it all).

A girlfriend of mine had one of the rare team logos. One of the guys got a glimpse of it and got so excited he grabbed the badge and was exclaiming "Hey, what's THIS one! No wonder I couldn't figure you out! What IS this???"

What he didn't realize...(no, he REALLY didn't realize)...was that he had her tit in his hand.

This poor oblivious bastard was so unaccustomed to having a mammary in his hand he didn't know it. And he was so bent on his geeking that he never noticed until my friend said "Hey, uh, P. You wanna take your hand off my tit, please?" Upon which he let go as if it had suddenly bitten him.

I coudn't make this stuff up.

As I type this, a figure of the Angel (from the X-Men comic) is looking down at me from atop my monitor, along with several Inspector Gadget figures (the Matthew Broderick movie ones...so I'm weird...)
I have done professional comics work, sell SF and fantasy art at conventions, have been a D&D roleplayer for 25 years, play City of Heroes online, and married a H.P. Lovecraft fan and fellow SF geek.
Yep, I'm a gal, and vastly proud of my comics, my art, my characters, and my geeky fan hubby.

Now, if I could make my geekdom pay well enough, I could quit retail, and not have to worry about customers any more...ah, the dreams!

By the way, if you want to read my Inspector Gadget novella, complete with artwork, go to:

                          I work in RETAIL.

Ooh...Lovecraft. I'd almost forgotten. My all-time favorite game is Eternal Darkness, based on some of Lovecraft's work. It is, hands down, the creepiest game I've ever played, especially in the dark with no one around.
