Ooh...Lovecraft. I'd almost forgotten. My all-time favorite game is Eternal Darkness, based on some of Lovecraft's work. It is, hands down, the creepiest game I've ever played, especially in the dark with no one around.
Oh Goddess.... I sat around and watched a friend play Sanity's Requim.... *Shivers* And it takes ALOT to freak me out.

Add me to the ranks of female and gamer geek.

Yes, I'm a girl. Yes, I play video games. I've beaten all the Tomb Raiders, Mario Bros, Sonic, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro. Destroyed Diablo and Diablo 2. Love the Dooms (am replaying Doom 3 now that I have my new graphics card ), Half-life, Descent, etc. etc. Enjoyed Fable, Kingdom Hearts. I am a WoWer and have been a member of the same MUD since 1994.

I have my own webcomic, soon to be two. I write fantasy, sci-fi, and horror books. I still have a box full of Magic: the Gathering cards, used to play D&D, and am working on finishing three different graphic novels of my own. I own a playstation, a gamecube, and an xbox.

Am I a goddess yet? I always wanted to be one

More things I'd forgotten. I still have most of my vast collection of Magic cards.

And I'm glad I'm not the only one who loved Eternal Darkness. I thought the game was so clever.

I get similar comments when I dare to bring a graphic novel to work to read in the breakroom. Seeing someone reading a book is enough of a rarity up here that people can't let it go by without commenting on it, but *gasp* a comic book?
Ye Gods. I always hate it when people start quizzing me about my reading habits. A co-worker is reading Nora Roberts, Danielle Steele or some other trash and she is praised for being a "reader". But if I'm reading one of my sci-fi/fantasy mags, Terry Pratchett, one of the classics, or something off the banned books list, I'm labeled as immature because "it isn't real."

Oh, it's good that I read. But if it isn't something written by a hack and offer an unrealistic portrayal of romance, then it doesn't count. And if I'm reading a book that's been made into a blockbuster movie, like Dracula or War of the Worlds, it has to be because I saw the movie. Not because it's a good book.

Tigress, entirely with you on this. I read some manga (for kicks) and other graphic novels (like Y the Last Man, and the Sin City books, recently) since they're easy to read bit by bit in between calls. Most of my coworkers look at me like I'm nuts, especially when they also notice me reading webcomics and posting on TWOP.

The high point of my geeklife was meeting Neil Gaiman at AggieCon. I'd made myself a charm bracelet of onyx beads interspersed with the various Endless symbols (ankh, mirror, book, etc.), and either he was being very polite or he was actually impressed by it.
Having met the man, I can safely say he was actually impressed by it.

I have a one-of-a-kind Lady Death tie! I know it's one of a kind because he drew Lady Death on my tie while I was standing in front of him.

I can't help but wonder if its at least partly a cultural thing. I've had quite a few female gamers in my groups in the past, and there's never been any comment about them. I've also been to LRP and met girls who can batter me into the ground without even breaking a sweat, again, no comment on them. That might be because of the armour and weaponry they wear though...

So just out of curiousity, is this sort of comment and sexism more prevalent in America than England, or am I just missing it?

I hate that film. Steven Spielberg should be banned from film making. I actually live in the town where War of the Worlds was set, its practically required reading here, there's a statue of a martial to celebrate it and everything.

Admittedly H.G.Wells wrote it because he hated this place and wanted to write a story about it being destroyed but at least its some sort of claim to fame other than being a necropolis (long story).

                    LOL!

That's awesome! Upon reading the REAL reason why H.G. Wells used your city as the place of destruction, I'd be a little hesitant to pronounce that to the world at large.

Sure! I've had this problem before. I'm a guy who has worked in a few call centers, and still people have a hard time believing a man can work in one of those places. And, when it goes further to a supervisor call, they can't believe my supervisor from time to time has been a woman! Men just don't work for women, according to these scummy people.

As for comics, I'm into manga and my favourites range from the very sugary and girly (Chobits) to the very bloody (Blade of the Immortal).
Holy crap! There are other Blade of the Immortal fans out there!

I've got somewhat similar tastes, though I lean harder on the 'bloody' than the 'sugary and girly.' However, I'll snap up the new FuruBa or Wallflower as fast as I'll snap up a Samurai Deeper Kyo or Gunslinger Girl.

When I asked a young guy (probably 25 or so) if he would like to donate, he chuckled and replied "Hah, no, that's ok."

You should've asked him why he didn't want to "save the boobies". Tell him if he doesn't contribute, he may never get to touch a boobie again b/c all the women of the world will have to have them removed b/c of breast cancer. Scare him into contributing a LOT! (this won't work if he's gay though......)

At my old job, we did collections for breast cancer research from time to time, and a guy was in with his girlfriend, we asked him if he wanted to donate, he said, quote "Why? I don't have boobs." unquote. We were stunned for about 1/2 second. That's how long it took his girlfriend to slug him. He ended up giving $5 just to placate his girlfriend.
