  • Super entitled artist

    Hey guys!

So, I help run the art show at a local convention, and I need a little help. A little background, part of my job is dealing with artists who are going to display their artwork in our show. For the past three years I've run this show, this simply meant I signed up the artists and made sure to put a board (what we display their artwork on) on reserve for them. Last year, due to artist alley being reduced cause of a change in venue, the art show has become way more popular. Last year we were all filled up.

So, this year I've already confirmed a few artists and then this girl shows up. She's an artist, and she's got a friend she's representing. From her emails, she keeps throwing a hissy fit that we aren't doing what other conventions have apparently done with her and giving the both of them two boards each instead of the standard one board per artist. I've told her the convention cares more about making sure all artists are equally represented and that we give out any extra room at the convention. Apparently this isn't a good enough reply cause an email was forwarded to me from my boss, and basically this artist continued to explain that she felt entitled to two boards each for herself and her friend, and that other art shows had given her friend and her two panels each.

Now, I was okay and willing to deal with this shit until she questioned the quality of the show because "we care more about fairness than quality" and "Great artists like herself and her friend" are getting only about as much room as everyone else.

Anyways, I'd like you guys to check this email I'm sending to the artist to make sure I'm being polite and nothing about this email seems to betray how much I want to tell this girl to get the fuck over herself cause while she and her friend are pretty good artists, part of the idea of the art show is allowing artists who don't really get a chance to show their artwork off and can't afford or get into artist alley to still be seen.

Also, the big capitalized word in there is because she literally kept capitalizing all the letters and talking to my boss and myself like we were children. I'm just following her example.

    Dear Entitled Artist,

I thank you for your concern about the quality of our art show. We've always done everything to ensure everyone involved has fun and is adequately represented. Money is important, but so is making sure that our artists are happy and everyone is included. This is especially important if we have the turn out we had last year.

We cannot reserve more than ONE panel per artist, with any remaining room to be divided at the time of set up. I'm sorry if this means you feel you cannot bring some of your bigger, higher quality prints. I'm sorry that while you have been able to secure more panels at other art shows, we at Localcon like to represent all artists interested in displaying their artwork in our show and can only offer what limited space we have.

We look forward to having you in our show and thank you for your patience,

    Le Wonderful Rena Muffin

One more thing I'd like to add, this is the first time I think I have ever had to deal with a customer like this. I wouldn't asked for help but after reading her email, I was seriously shaking with anger. I just want to make sure everyone has a fun time and there are no hurt feelings. I want all artists, even this one, to feel welcome and not hate our convention or hate us for giving them a bad time.

      Ugh, what an EW!

The letter looks good to me. Though I'd quickly find some gauze, since your tongue must be bleeding profusely at the moment from biting it so hard.

Looks okay. Since you filled up last year, I'd go with this since she's sure to air her complaints to anyone that will listen to her once she gets there.

I'm sorry you feel that ONE panel is not enough to display your art. There are plenty of others who would be glad to have that ONE panel. We are refunding your entry fee (if applicable) and cancelling your entry. This will be assigned to someone who will be happy to be included in Localcon.

        Have a nice day.
I'd tell you where to go, but I work there and I don't want to see you everyday.

I honestly wish I could do this, but I need bosslady's permission. Also, we charge the artists a certain percentage of the commission they made (it's nice so if they didn't sell anything, then there's no loss for them and they just take their work home) so they technically haven't paid one red cent yet.

Worse comes to worst, after dealing with some (Almost) EW's last year, me and the art show staff implimented an interesting little rule.

Let's just say if the EW's complain a little more, suddenly all the good boards will be "reserved" and they'll have to settle with the two in the back.

As an artist who goes to cons all over the US ( and Canada) I think that letter looks just fine. As for her and her friend ( and I have suspicions as to who it is) I think an art show is more about selling ORIGINALS, not prints. Sell your prints at your table. Why does anyone bid higher on prints than the regular selling price?? At least with an original, you are getting a one- of- a-kind piece.
I would never have the gall of asking for more than my fair share, no matter how good I think I am.

As a fellow art show runner (back me up here, Enjis ), I'd say you were more than fair and polite in the letter. Wish I could say I've never heard of an artist behaving this way, but, OMG, the stories I could tell.... I have my suspicions as to the identities as well.

Every con has to work within their budget, both in money and space. Most artists understand this and work with it. Others, not so much. If they're so concerned about making sales of their big originals, go exhibit in a gallery. I like the fact that you're interested in making sure other artists get their fair share of attention.

As for prints vs. originals as Enjis mentioned, that seems to depend on the con. I've worked some where prints go far more than originals in the show (limited edition prints, that is) and others were originals are more popular. Heck, it even depends on the year. More prints sold in the AnthroCon art show this year than originals, which really surprised me.

I've worked with a lot of artists at their booths at cons, helping with set up, break down, and when they were friends I'd plop down and watch over the table while they went to a panel or get food.

                  I, personally, would've mentioned:

Yes, we are very proud to show fairness to all artists, rather than placing some above the others based on personal preference. This is a show to bring light to new artists, not-so-well-known artists, and allow veteran artists to show a couple pieces they are most proud of.

^ This (in my opinion) is a polite, neutral way to shut down her "OMG you're so much more interested in fairness than quality." She made that out to be something negative, a bad thing, but if you come out saying you're proud of it and you do it on purpose, the only thing she can do is devolve into insults or "Other cons do this" whinging.

IMO, you said "sorry" one too many times, and it may be percieved as condescending.

I would also point out that the change of venue is part of the reason for the change. Maybe say "Due to the change of venue, we cannot reserve more than ONE panel per artist..." Gives the EW a chance to shift some of her anger to things that are more obviously beyond your control.

Yep, too much apologizing! I've made quite a few changes (sorry, once I got rolling I couldn't stop! ) I guess I'm a wannabe editor!

How about this for a reply:

                        Dear Artist,

Sadly, we are now sold out of spots because it took you to long to properly reserve a spot. Hope to see you next year.

And as to the line "other conventions did it for me"
there's always the classic "mom" answer -
                          "We are not other conventions".

Like the last edit I saw - good, professional ring to it.

RM, I was gonna say "Hey, just sell her two more spots." until you clarified that the show's cut comes out of sales, not space rental. So EWArtist wants twice as much FREE space as everyone else? Yikes.
